For the rest of the day, we'll visit either Khuoi Khon or Coc Xa village - both home to the Black Lo Lo people. Khuoi Khon gained recognition through the French documentary "The Journey into Unknown Land", featuring rugby player Frédéric Michalak. Coc Xa, by contrast, remains off the tourist trail and offers a more authentic, untouched atmosphere. We’ll set off for Cao Bang, taking the scenic route via Khau Coc Cha Pass. Though only 2.5 kilometres long, this steep mountain pass is made up of 15 levels and 14 sharp bends, offering an unforgettable ride through dramatic and rugged landscapes.

Descending from the pass, we arrive in the peaceful Xuan Truong Valley, a stunning area filled with vast rice fields and traditional stilt houses. 8:30: We begin our journey to Ban Gioc Waterfall, a spectacular natural landmark located on the border between Vietnam and China. Rising around 30 metres high and spanning more than 200 metres wide, Ban Gioc is widely regarded as the most beautiful waterfall in northern Vietnam and among the most impressive in Southeast Asia.

The journey continues to Nguom Ngao Cave (standard route), quietly hidden in the tranquil Maize Valley. Stretching over 2 kilometres, the cave unveils an extraordinary world of stalactites and stalagmites formed over millions of years. Beyond its geological beauty, Nguom Ngao holds strong historical significance—it served as a refuge for thousands of local residents during the Vietnam–China border conflict in 1979, adding a meaningful human dimension to the visit. In the afternoon, we return to Cao Bang, with enriching stops along the way. Our first visit is Phuc Sen Blacksmith Village, renowned across northern Vietnam for its hand-forged farming tools and knives. We then continue to Dia Tren Paper Village, where you discover a centuries-old craft practised by the Tay ethnic group. Artisans produce handmade paper from tree bark through a meticulous process of soaking, pounding, filtering, and sun-drying. This durable, eco-friendly paper has long been used for calligraphy, religious rituals, and folk paintings, reflecting the deep connection between traditional craftsmanship and spiritual life in Cao Bang. Upon arrival, we embark on a scenic boat trip from Cao Thuong Pier. Cruising downstream along the Nang River, we pass through Puong Cave, an impressive limestone tunnel carved by the river and home to thousands of bats. Disembarking briefly, we explore the cave on foot before continuing our journey.

The cruise then brings us to Dau Dang Waterfall, a dramatic series of cascades where the Nang River squeezes between towering limestone cliffs. We enjoy a leisurely walk to discover this powerful and atmospheric site, surrounded by dense forest and striking rock formations.

Next, the boat glides onto the tranquil waters of Ba Be Lakes, Vietnam’s largest natural freshwater lake system and the heart of Ba Be National Park. Comprising three interconnected lakes - Pe Leng, Pe Lu, and Pe Lam - the area is renowned for its calm emerald waters, limestone mountains, and rich biodiversity.

As we cruise across the lake, we pass the iconic Widow Islet (An Ma Islet), a small limestone outcrop steeped in local legend. We then disembark and take a short walk to our homestay in Pac Ngoi Village, where the Tay ethnic community lives along the lakeshore, offering a warm welcome and a peaceful setting for the night. Upon arrival, we make our first stop in Tam Coc, often referred to as “Halong Bay on land” for its spectacular karst scenery rising from emerald rice fields. This picturesque landscape also appeared in the famous French film Indochina. Enjoy a private sampan boat ride along the peaceful Ngo Dong River, drifting through three natural caves while taking in a harmonious blend of limestone formations, rice paddies, and rural village life.

After the boat ride, we visit Thai Vy Temple, a serene and lesser-known sanctuary nestled among rice fields and limestone mountains. Dedicated to the Tran Dynasty kings, the temple honours Emperor Tran Thai Tong and his successors, who led Vietnam during a golden age in the 13th century. Built entirely of stone, the temple stands out for its simple yet elegant architecture and its tranquil atmosphere, offering a deeper insight into Vietnam’s royal and spiritual heritage away from the crowds. Following lunch, we transfer to Hoa Lu, the ancient capital of Vietnam in the 10th century. Here, we visit two historic temples dedicated to Emperor Dinh Tien Hoang (r. 968–980) and Emperor Le Dai Hanh (r. 980–1009), the founders of the first independent Vietnamese dynasties after nearly a thousand years of Chinese domination. Although the temples were rebuilt in the 17th century, they continue to symbolise deep national respect for these emperors and feature traditional Vietnamese architecture set against a dramatic limestone backdrop.

To begin the day’s activities, you may choose to enjoy a leisurely bike ride along the dyke, offering beautiful views of rice paddies and dramatic limestone mountains. The ride leads to Thung La Temple, a peaceful and little-visited temple dating back to the 11th century. Here, you'll listen to a traditional musical performance, offering insight into the region’s cultural heritage.

Afterwards, return to Van Long Nature Reserve for a tranquil sampan boat ride through a vast landscape of limestone karsts and wetlands. As one of Vietnam’s largest nature reserves and a Ramsar-listed wetland of international importance, Van Long is known for its rich biodiversity. With a bit of luck, you may spot Delacour’s langurs (white monkeys), egrets, or other water birds resting on the cliffs and along the marshes. After lunch, we continue to Lang Van Church, one of the most striking contemporary religious landmarks in Ninh Binh. Designed in an impressive Gothic style, the church is characterised by pointed arches, soaring vaulted ceilings, and an imposing bell tower rising over 100 metres, making it one of the tallest church towers in Vietnam.

We then take part in an embroidery workshop led by Mrs. Lam, a local master craftswoman. With great pride, she introduces the traditional embroidery techniques passed down through generations. Under her guidance, you have the chance to work with needle and fabric, gaining hands-on experience and a deeper appreciation of this delicate craft, just like a local artisan. We continue to Thanh Tien, a 400-year-old village famous for crafting delicate paper flowers. Here, local families create these symbolic flowers for the New Year festival as offerings to their ancestors. You visit the home of Mr. Hieu, a renowned artisan, and learn how to make your own paper flower under his guidance.

The journey goes on to Sinh village, another 400-year-old craft community known as the birthplace of Hue’s traditional folk prints. Meet Mr. Phuoc, who shares the techniques behind these distinctive artworks - an ideal chance to find meaningful handmade souvenirs. Around midday, we return to Hue. We'll explore the serene Thien Mu Pagoda, one of the oldest and most revered pagodas in Hue, founded in 1601. Set on the banks of the Perfume River, this spiritual landmark is instantly recognisable by its elegant octagonal tower. The peaceful surroundings and river views make Thien Mu Pagoda a symbolic and contemplative highlight of the former imperial capital.

Continue to the Imperial Citadel, the last remaining symbol of what was once Vietnam’s imperial capital. Inspired by Vauban-style fortifications, the complex is divided into three distinct sections: Kinh Thanh (the Capital City), Hoang Thanh (the Imperial City), and Cam Thanh (the Forbidden City). Within these walls lie many of Hue’s most remarkable landmarks, including the Flag Tower, the imposing South Gate, the Palace of Supreme Harmony, the temples dedicated to past dynasties, and the former royal residential quarters.

In the morning, transfer to Long Xuyen Floating Market and Floating Village, located on a lively yet authentic tributary of the Mekong River. From the boat, observe the daily routines of riverside communities as traders, families, and fishermen go about their morning activities.

Continue by boat to Cu Lao Ong Ho Island, home to a small museum dedicated to President Tonne Duc Thang. Explore the island by bicycle, cycling through quiet lanes and enjoying the peaceful rural landscapes shaped by the river. Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant.

In the afternoon, return by road to Ho Chi Minh City and check in at your hotel in the late afternoon. Dinner is at your own expense (not included). Overnight in Ho Chi Minh City.
