Overview
The Cathedral of Nossa Senhora de Lourdes or the Catedral de Pedra; is a Catholic church located in the city of Canela, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, in southern Brazil.
It is considered a major tourist attraction of the so-called Serra Gaúcha. Its characteristic style is English Gothic. The church has a 65 metre high tower and a 12-bell carillon made of cast bronze,
Made by Giacomo Crespi from Italy. Inside, there are three panels made up of canvases painted by the artist Marciano Schmitz, representing “Apparition of the Virgin”, “Allegory of Angels” and “The Annunciation”. The Via Sacra paintings were made by Pablo Herrera, a Uruguayan sculptor and restorer of Sacred Art. Wood and clay were used, with the bottom full of paintings with images superimposed on the clay.
