Meet up with your knowledgeable guide in St. Mark's Square, a true cornerstone of Venice. The majestic St. Mark's Basilica and the elegant Doge's Palace open onto this wide, bustling square. Learn about the basilica's Byzantine architecture and the palace's glory days as the seat of power in Venice before setting out into the narrow streets.

Continue on to explore Castello, a quieter residential district away from the crowds. At Saint Giovanni and Paolo Square, stop to admire the grand church in which 25 doges have been buried, as well as the equestrian monument of Italian mercenary captain Bartolomeo Colleoni. You can also pay a visit to the home of one of the neighborhood's most famous residents—merchant and explorer Marco Polo. Finally, pass the distinguished Teatro Malibran, which has hosted the works of musicians such as Handel and Scarlatti, before returning to St. Mark's Square.
