What you can expect

Experience the historic city centre of Wittenberg with its Castle Church and the famous door where Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses. Stroll around the streets and follow the footsteps of Martin Luther and his colleagues. Visit the old church of Stadtkirche, where Luther preached and he and Katharina von Bora were married. Their marriage is re-enacted every year during a popular festival. Follow your guide to see Luther’s Oak, where his supporters burned a pile of catholic doctrine documents, and where Luther himself threw in the Papal Bull, which threatened him with excommunication. The oak tree was planted in 1830, in celebration of this event. You would never guess that his little quiet town was the centre of one of the best-known religious revolutions in the world.
The events that unfolded here in the 16th Century changed the foundations of Christendom. It was here where Martin Luther lived and preached, and on October 31, 1517, he nailed his 95 Theses to the door of the Castle Church. The Protestant Reformation had begun. Sometimes called the “Rome of the Protestants”, many Luther memorial sites were added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1996.
