What you can expect

    • Kyoto Beyond the Crowds – Local Culture, Hidden History & Golden Pavilion
Step away from Kyoto’s busiest tourist streets and discover a quieter, more local side of the ancient capital. This walking tour takes you through northern Kyoto, where traditional areas, old temples, shrines and everyday life still exist away from the usual sightseeing routes.

Begin around Nishijin, one of Kyoto’s most historic districts, known for its traditional textile culture and its own geiko tradition. Wander through the neighborhood’s quieter streets while discovering how generations of craftspeople, merchants and entertainers helped shape this part of Kyoto.

Continue to the tomb of Murasaki Shikibu, the legendary author associated with The Tale of Genji, often described as one of the world’s earliest novels. From here, walk deeper into northern Kyoto and visit Daitoku-ji, a vast Zen temple complex filled with peaceful pathways, centuries of history and a completely different atmosphere from Kyoto’s busiest temples.

Next, it’s time for something local—and delicious. Stop by Kazariya, a traditional shop famous for aburi-mochi, a Kyoto sweet that has been enjoyed here for centuries. Just beside it stands Imamiya Shrine, a beautiful historic shrine deeply connected to the local community.

And throughout the tour, I’ll also be your photographer!

As a professional photographer, I’ll naturally capture beautiful photos of you while we explore—walking through traditional streets, visiting temples and shrines, laughing together, or simply enjoying Kyoto. Because we spend much of the tour away from the biggest crowds, we can often create more relaxed and natural photos than at Kyoto’s busiest sightseeing spots.

So don’t worry about spending the whole tour behind your phone. Enjoy Kyoto, and I’ll help make sure you have some great memories to take home.

Along the way, I’ll share stories about Kyoto’s history, religion, traditional culture and everyday life. And please, ask me anything—Japanese culture, food, restaurants, life in Kyoto, or even completely random questions about Japan. I love those too.

And don’t worry—we’re not going to make you come all the way to Kyoto and skip everything famous!

Finish the experience at the spectacular Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion. After spending much of the tour discovering a quieter Kyoto that many visitors never see, end with one of the city’s most iconic sights—and, of course, we’ll get some great photos there too.

This tour is for travellers who want more than a checklist of famous attractions.

Come experience the Kyoto locals know, hear the stories hidden beyond the usual tourist route, enjoy the city without constantly worrying about taking photos, and still finish the day with one unforgettable Kyoto classic.
