Discover the authentic flavours and traditions of Zanzibar on this unique Spice Farm and Swahili Cooking Experience. Your adventure begins with a hotel pick-up by our driver, followed by a visit to a local spice farm where you will enjoy a guided walk through the plantation. See, smell, touch, and taste fresh spices such as cloves, cinnamon, vanilla, nutmeg, ginger, turmeric, lemongrass, black pepper, chilli, cumin, tamarind, and ylang-ylang. You will also enjoy seasonal tropical fruits freshly picked from the farm.
During your visit, local farmers will explain how spices are grown, harvested, and used in traditional Zanzibar cooking and natural remedies. You will learn about the island’s rich spice heritage while exploring the beautiful farm surroundings.
Before the cooking session, local women chefs (Mamas) will warmly welcome you and introduce the traditional Swahili dress code. You will have the opportunity to wear a Khanga, known locally as “Mavazi ya Khanga,” commonly worn by Swahili women along the Zanzibar coast. Our Mamas will teach you how to wear it and explain its cultural importance.
You will then join the Mamas in preparing a traditional Swahili meal using fresh farm ingredients. Depending on the season and available ingredients, dishes may include Pilau (spiced rice), coconut vegetables, ripe bananas cooked in coconut milk, fresh fish, and other local specialities. After enjoying the meal you prepared, our driver will take you back to your hotel.
