A gem of a place to stay within a beautiful area. Beds and showers were really good but both dining and self-catering facilities needs improvement. We used the hostel as a base to explore the surrounding area and walks so it was perfect for us.

Negatives - findings the place! There needs to be better signage and there is nil lightning from car park to the builidng. Its very very dark arriving. And trying to find the place and the care park. Positives- everything else! Car park and building felt safe and its a beautiful location and building. Inside felt like every other yha, which is a bit of a shame but practical and functional. Clean. It was soooo warm! Which was a pleasant suprise. But also you could control this yourself once in the room. We went private room shared bathrooms. Which again. Functional but clean and fine. Staff were lovely! Facilities good and i really wish i could have stayed for breakfast looked great. Id love to come back here with more time and see the national trust site, village and area. The walking routes and info at reception are fabulous. The coffee is great. Will be back !

Hi Ann. Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. We are pleased that you enjoyed your stay and the breakfasts are definitely excellent. Regarding the car park, unfortunately this isn't owned by the YHA but the National Trust who allow YHA guests to use it at a reduced rate so any feedback on the car park would need to go the National Trust directly. We hope to welcome you again in the future when you can try the breakfasts. Kind regards, Lyndsey, Reception manager

Beautiful location, building and great staff
Fantastic value for money, very clean, building is old so expect condensation on windows and the like. If we had been organised would have taken a bag of microwave dinners and milk, communal kitchen has everything you could need. Only thing I missed was a kettle in room for cups of tea. Food from restaurant: breakfast very good with everything hot and tasty and as much as you like. Evening meal good but again my preference I would have liked hot water and teas and coffees left out like breakfast.

Hi. Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. Apologies for the time taken to reply as we've had some Expedia accessibility issues. We are pleased you enjoyed your stay. Tea and coffee are part of the breakfast service so are left out for guests who have paid for a breakfast. The evening meal service is off the menu so hot drinks aren't included but can be purchased separately from reception. We hope to welcome you again in the future. Kidn regards, Lyndsey Reception and Accommodation manager.

Alton Towers
Attended with my son in an en suite room, for a trip to nearby Alton Towers. It is basic, but clean and perfect for our requirements. Wifi nit very good if this is required.

Trip to Alton towers
Amazing location. Unfortunately covid put a damper on things and made things abit more difficult as I wanted to use the shared kitchen to make drinks etc but wasn’t allowed. Would have been nice if the tellys were on. But generally it was a cheap and cheerful break.

Lovely stay over August Bank Holiday weekend
Great stay for the August bank holiday weekend. Staff were very helpful and friendly. The room was clean and spacious with a great view of the garden. I had no worries about any risk of COVID-19, all the measures that were put in place were great. Amazing location, so many walking routes around.
View from my room

This is the 5th year I’ve visited but the first with a toddler. Lots had changed since we last arrived. I think the place is amazing. Staff were friendly and the location is perfections. Things that need to change- bring back the toddler play area in the lounge. It was the perfect from till you moved it all. Please purchase some cots with actual mattresses. Travel cots and wooden bases are horrendous and we didn’t get much sleep. As an old building it gets very warm and the windows don’t open. Please get some fans for the rooms. Prices on alcohol and hot drinks has gone up loads! £3.50 for a tin of beer is shocking!

How about a kettle?
Comfy beds. Facilities to make a cuppa at will would have been much appreciated. Rare not to have this in accommodation these days.

It was just what we needed
This hotel was just what we needed. My friends and I only needed a hotel for one night and we had a budget to stick to. This hotel provided us with a bedroom with beds and bedding, I had a good night sleep, my friends either had a good night sleep too or found the mattress to be hard. Can't please everyone. The grounds were beautiful. We walked round the entire grounds the evening we arrived and again the next day after breakfast (we had brought in).

Don't ask for 308 309 these rooms are in the attic with paper thin walls between them Definitely Go out for supper but the breakfast was okay

Very relaxing place to stay.
Very relaxing place to stay. Lots of walks surround the hall. Great view from tea room that serve excellent food and pots of tea. I would go back - no hesitation. The staff there make your stay so very easy. They are all extremely polite and welcoming. It's very well organised. Fantastic value for money. My friends and I stayed overnight, so had the evening meal, breakfast and the packed lunch. Couldn't fault it. I have already recommended it to 3 people and their families and only been back a day. You travel through many cities, fast roads, and crowds of people in life. All a stone's throw from Ilam but when you're there it could be a million miles away from all the hustle and bustle of normal life. It truly is a place to 'switch off'. Highly recommended.

Ilam Hall - Hostel stay
It was only a one night stay but we wished it could have been longer. This is a magnificent property nestled in picturesque countryside. The room was nice and the staff were very friendly and helpful. The breakfast was also very good value.

Friendly hostel
Staff were very helpful, and for a hostel the facilities were very useful, especially the self catering kitchen and free wifi (I had no 3G coverage there). You couldn't ask for a more beautiful location.

Great stay.
A truly fantastic stay at Ilam Hall. This is the first time I have stayed in a YHA and I am gutted about what Ive been missing out on all these years. Absoluely spotless, staff that cant do enough for you and a genuinely warm atmostphere, I didnt want to go home. Couple this with absoluetly breathtaking views and grounds, truly a very special place. I will be back :)
