Haifa

Travel Guide
Bat Galim beach
Combine the leisure of the sandy beaches and green parks with a history brought to life by museums and temples in one of Israel’s largest cities.

With a thriving port and a fascinating history, Haifa is among the crowning jewels of the eastern Mediterranean Sea. The coastal city has gorgeous beaches and a leafy terrain running down the side of Mount Carmel, where an intriguing blend of religious history has unfolded. Learn about Jewish and Arabic customs and investigate the founding of the Carmelite Order.

The city’s many sandy strands let you take advantage of the hot summer weather in Haifa. For utter serenity, head to Quiet Beach, where a breakwater ensures the waves are suitable for swimming and stand-up paddling. Surfers should brave the waves of Bat Galim Beach on the northern cape, while culture enthusiasts might enjoy events in the amphitheater near Dado Zamir Beach.

On the slope of Mount Carmel stand the marvelous Bahá’í Gardens, whose Shrine of the Báb possesses the remains of the prophet who founded the Bahá’í religion. Climb up the elegant steps that are flanked by cascades, ponds and colorful floral displays. Nearby is the Stella Maris Monastery, considered the world headquarters of the Carmelite Order. Admire the church’s ornate interior and impressive murals.

Continue your religious tour with a trip to the quaint Russian Orthodox Church and a visit to the Central Synagogue, known for its colonnade and holy ark.

While much of the city is centered on history, the Israel National Museum of Science, Technology and Space – Madatech focuses on the future. Watch 3-D movies and play with the interactive displays in one of Israel’s largest science museums.

The city of Haifa is a little south of Acre in the northwestern section of Israel. Fly to the Haifa Airport, or arrive in Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion International Airport and then drive north for 70 miles (110 kilometers) to reach Haifa. Make sure to see other nearby cities such as Nazareth, Tiberias and Nahariyya.

Haifa is a busy port city, a technological haven and a cradle of myriad faiths and creeds.
