Seeing a show at Torquay’s unusual Little Theatre is all part of the fun of a vacation in Torquay. Enjoy the unusual experience of seeing a stage performance in a church. The small auditorium makes for an intimate show, and means you will be able to see all the action up close.
Admire the pretty exterior of the church that houses the theater before you step through its doors. Once inside, you can mingle with actors, theater staff and other members of the audience as you enjoy a drink or two in the foyer. Or, if you are visiting during the day, have a hot drink or a snack in the coffee lounge.
The auditorium can seat anything up to 240 audience members. Notice how, despite its small size, it still has all the elements of grandeur that you would expect from a traditional British theater. Red velvet and gilt detailing abound, and there are two tiers to the seating.
The theater’s shows are put on by the TOADS Theatre Company, an amateur group who act for the love of acting. Bring along the kids to one of the weekly Tadpoles youth theater workshops run by the company.
Expect to see anything from Shakespearian classics to fun farces and even musicals here. Past performances have included the likes of George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion and an adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women, as well as adaptations of modern children’s classics such as Roald Dahl’s The Witches. The latter was performed by young members of the Tadpoles group.
Tickets for shows at the Little Theatre can be bought at the door or booked in advance online. The Little Theatre is located within easy walking distance of Torquay Harbour and its many attractions. Get to the theater in around 15 minutes on foot from the harbor. Around the harbor itself, you’ll find many other family-friendly entertainment options, such as Torquay’s Dinosaur World and the English Riviera Wheel.
