The location and gardens are amazing. The staff are wonderful. Great brunch! The rooms were very clean. Towels are very old, thin and small. It was incredibly noisy. You can hear every movement through the walls and ceilings and the housekeepers shouting in the hallways at about 8:30 am. There are many large groups that stay and they are up late at night, up to 2 am sometimes, drinking and talking very loudly.

Lovely room and lovely hotel, very clean and very quiet. Breakfast was ok apart from the eggs, very strange taste and texture. We also used the pool near reception and I would absolutely stay again. Very friendly staff and lovely facilities!

Convenient for beach (via cablecar) and Christo Rei view. Room was reasonably good, with balcony although view was a bit compromised. On arrival, reception staff were extremely friendly and we were made most welcome. If you are driving, you can park in paid bays right outside -10c will get you 15mins to drop bags, for example - free parking a bit further away. Neptuno restaurant nearby highly recommended for good simple food, very reasonably priced. We stayed one night, which is enough to see the area (and a Gajarau dive) - but good base if you are on a longer diving course. Some other places to see around the island !

The rooms are located in a few different buildings, from the reception and main building we had to walk a bit uphill to our building. There’s no wifi in the rooms, only in the lobby in the main building. The hotel is not very modern, the bathrooms could use an upgrade. We only had breakfast at the hotel, it was tasty, but pretty much the same everyday. Location of the hotel is good, close to shops and the bus stop is in front of the building. The closest beach is about 2 kms from the hotel, downhill, hard to reach without a car.

I can highly recommend. The room was in cleanliness - the service was top-notch and I really liked the morning breakfast. If they can start offering wi-fi in the room, then I would give it a full 5-stars. Apart from that, I am very impressed by the service and location provided by the hotel.

located in santa cruz area. 20 euro taxi fare from airport. bus stop across road with buses to funchal for 2.2 euros taking 25 mins. restaurants and mini supermarket across road also. very helpful on reception with booking tours etc. i would return

I loved how closely this property was located near the ocean, Christo Rei and the cable car. It was beautiful and they had a nice Continental breakfast. It was also located near a local bus stop.

This property is perfect for a couple, family or single traveller. The property is located close to many options for public transport, a beach, and many restaurants and grocery shops on the street. The room was very comfortable, and clean, it had a fridge which was very convenient. There was a beautiful view from the balcony, three excellent-sized swimming pools, table tennis, volleyball and badminton. The staff were very professional and helpful. Breakfast was great plenty to choose from, cereal, yoghurt, bread, cheese, ham, fruit and a selection of hot food and drinks.

Great short break!
Lovely hotel with comfortable rooms with superb sea views. Pools and gardens good too. Close to shops and some restaurants. Very good value accommodation for a short break on Madeira!

The staff both admin and hospitality were friendly and approachable and helpful. Transportation is ok bus stop right outside hotel to Funchal centro, there are a few places to eat locally, a fruit and veg store, a supermarket 2mins from the hotel or if you fancy a walk there is a hipermarket 8- 10mins away. WiFi only available in reception area and nontes facility in room. If Great view of the sea and nice location on the overall.

Dishonest kind of scam offer and desappointing customer service : we booked on Hotels.com a room with sea view. We paid more for that option versus the garden view of other view . The confirmation email didn’t say it was sea view so I said it in the comment section as well as asking for a double bedsince the offer was ‘ twin bed or double bed ‘ . The room they gave us when we arrived was #1 not with a sea view #2 didn’t correspond to the picture looking more old furniture and bathroom included #3 had a twin bed. We went back to reception and explained calmly but the woman asked me to show my booking reference as if she didn’t have it already or couldn’t find us, then made me acknowledge on the booking confirmation email it did not say sea view ... no kidding that is exactly what I reported in the first place in the comment section of our booking AND the price was higher because it was sea view so she could have recognized it straight away but no I had to repeat again and again show the booking website with price difference and show on our bank statement that we had paid a higher price for her to actually look for something else. Apparently mentioning we wanted to speak to the manager helped too.. but seriously what a dishonest and disastrous way to treat customers. The new room we got : yes sea view but smelt bad, actually no aeration in the bathroom at all , the TV remote wasn’t working. Also NO WIFI in the whole hotel only at the reception ... Finally bad breakfast..

Location is prime. .lots to do within walking distace. Parking available and thw room was amazing as all the staff. ....4 minutes from downtown Funchal.

I liked the pools - although the indoor one was supposed to be heated and it wasn't. Breakfast had something for everyone. The resident cats were very entertaining as was the singing barman in the evening! A really great character. The souvenir shop is good value and the lady was friendly and helpful. I think much more could be made of breakfast - the orange juice didn't taste nice at all and there was no apple juice. A couple more hot dishes would have been good too. I liked the sausages but don't eat eggs or beans.

I was in the refurbished part of the hotel and was happy with the standard of the room which had all amenities I needed including air con, tv and hair dryer. The staff were very pleasant and special thanks to Paulina at reception who would always go out of her way to assist you. The standard of cleanliness was excellent with room cleaned, beds made up and towels replaced every day.

Wouldn't stay again. Rude and outdated.
The location of this hotel isn't too bad at all. Cristo Rei is a short drive down the hill and there is a shopping mall up the road. Easy access to all the connecting motorways to Funchal, Machico etc. Upon arrival we were greeted by a gentlemen I say greeted but he was rude and arrogant. Refused to speak english. Showed him my check in information to be told I should have printed something. This is not what it says on Expedia. It says to just show the text. He made a big drama over that. Started to huff and puff. Slammed a piece of paper with the WiFi and email at me and told me to send it to reception. I went up to say to him it had sent for him to just shrug his shoulders then ignore me. Asked where the parking is. To be told there's none. Outside you must pay. We ended up parking off one of the little side roads. The rooms are outdated however the view was nice. The beds are uncomfortable you can feel the springs dig into you all night. And not only that but the walls are extremely thin. You can hear people next to you talking. This however wasn't the worst of the noise. Dogs bark all night long, and we were right outside the chambermaid area. So they were constantly shouting & arguing. Breakfast is your standard buffet style. I ended up skipping most of it as it was awful. I wouldn't come again. Better hotels available. There's hidden fees. Tax €10pp even though it said included. And if you want the kitchenette it's €12 a day! Lovely restaurants outside though go venture

Unfortunately - Storm Emma!
My time at the Dom Pedro Garajau was marred by the weather. Storm Emma was passing through. The hotel is not really designed for spending a lot of time indoors. The rooms are basic but very clean. A couple of the blocks are in the process of being refurbished. The only access from the rooms are via outside - so in particularly wet and windy weather this is not comfortable. The reception/bar area is ok for summer but designed to be warm and inviting on wet days unfortunately. The staff though are all very nice indeed. The restaurant although basic, has lovely staff and quite a reasonable selection of choice for the price you pay. The bonus of a carafe of wine included in half board option is very thoughtful. Not sure cold Brussel sprouts and ham is my idea of a salad though on one of the days, but someone must love it. All in all, its worth a visit for those on a budget.

Nice hotel close to beach and restaurants
We booked this hotel because of the convenience to buses, beach, walks and restaurants. The hotel was comfortable and clean and parts are being renovated for the new season. Our room needed updating so I am assuming this will be done in due time with the other parts. However it was spotlessly clean and the beds comfortable and we had a small balcony with a garden view and was sunny all during the day. Breakfast was good - we don't eat pork so were happy with the scrambled eggs and beans and cereals. However for others they felt it was not of sufficent variety. The heated indoor pool was good and because of the glass ceiling the sun shine through so it felt warm and summer like!! Wifi was only in the lobby so you had to come out of your apartment/room to get to the lobby for Internet access. I would recommend this hotel for its convenience and value for money.
