The "superior studio" was in fact just a bog standard bedroom, not a double twin. There was a long delay at check in. The hotel is nice but certainly not worth paying luxury prices for a "studio" for a standard twin pool facing room.

A very characterful property and pretty well equipped for a package holiday. It was very clean, the staff were very pleasant and obliging and the breakfasts were particularly good.

Good location
The hotel was waliking distance fromt he centre of Funchal as well as the area where most other hotels were found.There was also a bus to the centre for those who did not like walking! The hotel staff were very helpful n advising about buses. There were also several small restaurants if you did not want to eat in the hotel. We were told we had been upgraded but the room was the one we had booked. We were happy with the siz facilities and cleanliness. All the cleaning staff were lovely. We liked the fact that breakfast was varied and served from 7 - 10am every day - ideal for a holiday. Had indoor and outdorr po9ols (sadly the weather was not warm enough to use the outdoor one)

Wish I could review this hotel
I received confirmation of my hotel room in February. When I arrived in September I was told that my party was moved to another hotel without explanation. I arrived in the other hotel and it did not have thesuperior suit I had booked. I also had to pay cab fare to go to the other hotel. After checking my room, I went back to the reception desk and asked if this was a mistake. I was informed that it was not their problem and that I would have to contact the original hotel. A couple of days later I walked to the original hotel and was told that I should have gotten the info from my new hotel and that the new hotel would contact me. It never happened. AARP did refund part of my payment but I hope that anyone else file complaints against this hotel. It seems that the British had no problems but Americans certainly were not treated with respect. My brother-in-law and out wives are senior citizens and retired military. We still wonder what we did wrong to deserve this treatment. It cost each of us an additional 800 dollars for meals. AARP did make a partial reimbursement to us when we informed them of the problem

Pestana Mira Mar Garden Resort April 2017
Hotel was very good, the buffet was quite expensive, the other restaurants on site were very good. The grounds were excellent and the staff were first class.Although the Wi-Fi was very poor in the bedrooms, the only place for a good signal strength was at the reecptions!

Nice hotel, nice pools, clean and tidy, staff generally very helpful and polite, breakfast good, coffee possibly the worst I have ever tasted. Good for couples, kids -everyone. Air-con did not work for the first week of our stay and had no back up fans (I had to supply my room number before they said no to the fan, I assume this was because I was not in a superior room!). They reserved 500euros on my card and although they said it had been cancelled on a few occasions, it was not (leaving me with limited funds) so they get a low mark because of this. They charge you 5euros a day for parking which I think is a bit cheeky. Entertainment was similar to what you find at hotels in Bournemouth!

confusing but convenient
We had not realised this resort was 2 hotels combined, so checked in where we had booked, the Miramar, to be taken along long corridors and up 2 lifts, to our room which ended up in the Village resort. We then had several very uncertain hours as we were given no information about things like the room safe, wi fi and hotel amenities, and getting around the resort was confusing. Once settled, we were very comfortable, our room ( studio superior), a good size, though unfortunately our balcony faced north so we never sat out as we got no sun, it had a wonderful view over the city and mountain, but the grey cloud glowering over the mountain nearly the whole time, did not encourage cheerfulness!

On our anniversary
This is the third time we have stayed at this hotel and find it just right for us. The staff are lovely, the area great, and the gardens the best. Would recommend to all, possibly too quiet if you have children.

All pretty good. Excellent breakfast, though coffee from machines could be better. Room had everything required. Nice meal in restaurant. Price very reasonable for quality when booked through Expedia for Christmas period.

nice hotel but needs some modernisation,
the hotel needs up dating, we booked self catering with B&B as we both have dietary needs, when we got there we found the kitchen was not up to Pestana's standard so we changed rooms, the new room was not any better a faulty kettle which was replaced for another faulty kettle, the fridge was a drinks fridge so we could not get much food inside, NO cooking utensils, NO micowave, NO toaster, remember we booked self catering Hence we will not be back to the Mira Mar!!!!!!

While the staff were mostly helpful and the room kept clean (apart from emptying the ashtray and changing the towels), the hotel seems to want to cater for more mature people (and I am over 50)! Balcony lights were out at 11pm and the entertainment was old style. I was shocked to have to hire a sun umbrella if required by the pool and I have not experienced this at a hotel before. Another big disappointment was coffee and juice being instant from a machine. This is 2014 where fresh coffee is available everywhere including supermarkets and what was served was nearly undrinkable.

Lovely hotel shame lots of things closed
The hotel was lovely nice room good way we could share the facilities of the village next door which was just as well as the miramar restaurant adega was closed all week as the owners were on holiday!!!!! The pool bar at the miramar pool was also closed all week. So if you wanted a drink you had to go up two floors to the village pool bar. This was a shame as the miramar has a charm and style of an original Quinta. On the Saturday the village bar was closed for a private function so we got to use the miramar beautiful cocktail bar however a singer with electric keyboard was stuck in the corner with hotel music spoiling the ambience. The indoor pool and Jacuzzi was great and the little kitchen units were really useful. The miramar swimming pool was lovely swimming with mountain views was so relaxing. The position of the hotel was also good with a bus stop right outside the door.

Nice and comfortable, but needs some upgrade
The rooms are spacious and nice (had a superior studio) but the carpets need replacing and the gym needs new cardio machines. The breakfast buffet is great, and the area is safe.

Lovely hotel quiet rooms great location
This hotel was better than expected, rooms have good facilities inc a fridge so you can buy drinks from local supermarkets and sore cool. The rooms overlooking the pool/gardens and best. Breakfast has a good choice and good quailty. The hotel buffet meals are ok but very much the same we only eat in twice. The hotels special resturants are much better. The gardens are really good.

Hotel and felicities excellent
Friendly staff and excellent facilities, location is good for a 10 -15mins walk into the beautiful town of Funchel. Good to have an indoor pool which was warm water and those who like cool water had an excellent choose of 2 large pools.

Nice hotel overall, 15 min walk from Funchal city center , quiet, clean large and well equiped rooms with kitchenette, very large beds and nice view of the nice hotel gardens and pool as well as the hills of Funchal. Some staff members are very polite and helpfull, the others are pulling long faces ... Brealfast good but not outstanding. Free parking if you have a rented car. Free internet connection available only in the (nice) but chilly lobby. Nice hotel where I would return given a chance.

Lovely grounds and surroundings
The hotel is not in "Hotel Land" which is a big plus. The grounds are beautifully planted and the staff are extremely helpful. I wouldn't say it's a four star hotel but it is adequate and the facilities are good. Breakfast was great (we stayed B&B) but the hotel food was a bit pricey so we didn't eat there other than for breakfast. This wasn't a problem though - there is a frequent bus service into Funchal and there are lots of more reasonably priced restaurants with great food in the Old Town and along the sea front. Get yourself a 7 day urban bus pass for Euros 22 - available in town at the information point near the marina or at any Post Office. There is a very frequent bus service which stops right outside the hotel to and from Funchal. It's about a ten minute ride. It's not a long walk but there is a steep hill to climb on the way back which isn't great after dinner and some wine! Also Chalet Vicente restaurant just near the hotel has lovely food (more imaginative menu than most) and very good value. It also has a fantastic wine list.

Beautiful Hotel in Ideal Location
The Miramar Garden Resort Hotel is amazing! It is a beautiful building which has been tastefully extended to the rear to include Miramar Village. Our room was a lovely surprise being spacious, light and spotlessly clean. The bath/shower room was a delight and again spotlessly clean. We had a balcony which was a pleasant addition which we fully utilized during our stay. The staff were all wonderful - friendly, polite and so very helpful with nothing being too much trouble to them. The hotel pools were spotlessly clean. The water was cold when you first got in but within seconds felt warmer. The pool bar and restaurant was also very pleasant and again manned by friendly staff (Manuel is delightful). Breakfast was amazing - the choice was fantastic and a totally recommend the sultana bread (which is served warm and you cut off as many slices as you want) pure heaven! We didn't use the Miramar restaurant because it was a bit too pricey for our budget but the food looked amazing - maybe next time?

Good location, clean facilities
Stayed for a week at this hotel and was overall quite satisfied as the room was quite large, with a kitchenette and balcony, and the entire complex (it is connected to another hotel) was spotless. The pools were beautiful and well maintained. There are many cafes and restaurants nearby, and it is within walking distance of the old town (a good 20 minute walk). As well as easy access to buses, and a mini mart and bakery are just next door. What needs improving is the wifi - it is only available in the lobby. and sometimes there is live music or an event going on, so not great conditions to check email or get online. The staff are not very helpful and didn't provide a clear overview of facilities, what was open/not-open, how to get to old town, etc. so if you're looking for something that is a bit more self-service then this is the place.

We keep going back.
The fact that it is our 5th year at the Miramar/Village probably speaks for itself. Great hotel, gardens and pools. Staff could not be more friendly and helpful. Breakfast and poolside snacks perfect. Restaurant for dinner is expensive but there are lots of restaurants close by and downtown to choose from. Perfect location for Funchal as near enough to the centre but also far enough away. We will be back!

Hotel with Character.
Great hotel with character and fabulous gardens. The staff are all so nice and helpful without being intrusive. The breakfast is really good with plenty of choice from the buffet. The hotel's situation is ideal being within an easy downhill walk of Funchal. If you do not fancy the walk back uphill then you simply use the excellent very inexpensive bus service. Alternatively if you don't like buses there are plentiful taxis also. There are restaurants close to the hotel and many more in the town particularly the old town. If you prefer a more modern hotel then don't choose the Miramar or Village but instead one of the others in the "Pestana" group. We love the Miramar and this was our 4th time. Hope we are able to return.

Beautiful surroundings
The weather could have been kinder! Hotel location extremely convenient for bus routes and an easy walk into Funchal. Good choice of eating venues in the Hotel and other good restaurants close by. Grounds beautiful. 2 outdoor pools and an indoor pool in addition to spa facilities and a gym. We'd certainly be tempted back! Full day tours to East and West Madeira booked via expedia well organised, informative and in buses totally no more than 8 tourists, also to be recommended.

A Garden Paradise
This Pestana hotel has the most lovely garden all around it and its adjoined hotel The Village. One of the events on offer is a tour with the Pestana Garden Supervisor, who is highly knowledgeable and makes the tour great fun and you get a nice afternoon tea at the end. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Hard to fault this one. Situated almost opposite Reids Palace, little supermarkets and wonderful Bakery very close by, buses and taxis convenient, but walking into town is not arduous for the fit, along the Jacaranda avenue (flowering in spring).

Madeira first timers
The Miramar turned out to be a good choice for our honeymoon, which we picked based on everyone else's reviews! We enjoyed our stay as the staff were friendly and helpful and the facilities good - nice to have an indoor as well as two outdoor pools to choose from during low season. Make use of the health club as it's well maintained and wasn't busy (admittedly the hotel was very quiet as it was February). We had asked for a double rather than twin room on booking - the request hadn't made it to reception so we enquired if any other rooms were available and got a great upgrade, so it always pays to ask! Especially if the occupancy is low, as many of the rooms are timeshares. The older part of the hotel is a restored house and has a nice bar although we never made happy hour, but the two restaurants attached to it are a bit pricey (one wasn't open as it was low season); Luigis was bit cheaper and the pizzas are big! Only complaint on the hotel was that anything extra - iron, bathrobes etc are charged to your account unless you can show it was part of your booking or politley ask for them for free. These should really be provided for free in a four star hotel. Asde from that a really nice hotel and good location!

Third time to the Miramar and still impressed
The Pestana Miramar is a very good hotel. It is well situated on Estrada Monumental opposite Reids with excellent access to public transport. All the staff are very helpful and friendly with good English.The breakfast buffet is excellent and the restaurants in the hotel are very good. The design of the hotel with it's excellent and well maintained gardens facilitates a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. The rooms are well maintained but perhaps could do with an upgrade to the decoration. We enjoyed our stay at the Miramar. Worthwhile to pay bill a few hours before departure just in case they have a problem with the computers.

Great Hotel and impressive gardens.
Cannot fault the Pestana Miramar from the time we arrived to the time we left.Marco at the reception was very helpfull and friendly nothing was to much trouble. Location was ideal, just a 15 to 20 minute stroll into center of Funchal,if you did not feel like walking buses are very frequent and the stop was just out side the hotel.

A very good hotel
The Miramar hotel charges guests for a sunshade - this should be free in a 4* hotel, the additional revenue to the hotel is minimal, but it has a negative impact on a guest's viewpoint. Meals and drinks were expensive. Furthermore at the weekend restaurants were closed to guests for private functions

Great Hotel
The Pestana Miramar is a well managed hotel situated in a convenient location a short walk from the centre of Funchal, and also in the other direction, the Funchal Lido. Our room in the Miramar was well equipped having a small kitchen area, bath with shower, and a balcony facing the main pool area. The room was comfortable and very clean. The room was cleaned every day, and towels replaced when requested. Pool towels were also provided. There are two pools at the Miramar - a good size outdoor pool + an indoor pool with Jacuzzi. The Hotel also shares some facilities with the adjacent Pestana Village hotel which gives access to a third pool. All of the pools were kept spotlessly clean as was the entire Hotel and grounds. The grounds must get a special mention as the gardens in which the hotel is set are beautiful and make this hotel a very pleasant and relaxing place to be. Breakfast was included with the room rate and this comprised of a buffet style breakfast with just about anything you could want available - really set you up for the day. All in all a really good hotel.

Would use again
The hotel was ideally situated and was a 20 minute walk into Funchal. It did require a bit of effort of having to take 2 different lifts to get to our room. Our room was in another part of the hotel. The staff of the hotel are very pleasant and provide very good service. We would definitely return there.
