The Barat is in a lovely position on the beach and has lots of large shady trees which make it very beautiful. The older accommodation at the back needs some repairs. Still a lovely place.

Cleanliness issue after long closure; poor wifi
Beautiful seafronting setting. Dedicated pontoon jetty for easy arrival. Granted early checkin which was nice. Wifi was terrible and barely useable. Main issue: cleanliness. There were dead bugs and roaches in the bathroom which could have easily been hosed away before handing over the room to guests. More importantly, there seemed to be minor bed bugs from the mattress. My partner and I both had uncomfortable bites. We are still nursing the itches currently at home with cream/ointment. Pretty disappointing from an otherwise pleasant stay at The Barat. Hope the management can have a look (our room num was 322).

We stayed in the 4 bed dorm room with attached bathroom and toilet, which is really nice to have. The room however, gets quite cramp when there’re 4 bags in it, and there isn’t enough table space for things. Nevertheless, we like the tidy grounds and quality food at the restaurant.

We were at a round island swim event. Rooms clean & comfortable, staff friendly. The food and coffee was pretty good. We hired a private boat & had a great snorkelling trip. I’d stay again.

Oasis in the sea
The Perhentian islands are an oasis in the sea about a 30 to 45 minute high speed boat ride from Besut off the north east coast of Malaysia. Well worth the effort to get there because it is truly a little paradise. Beautiful sand and seawater that is as blue and green and fresh and salty as you would expect of heaven. It’s not for everyone, those with a wanderlust and experienced travellers will definitely be rewarded. The Barat Resort itself is basic but very functional and well managed.

The dorm room had thin walls, so you can hear the rooms beside you. The shower was just about acceptable. We left our luggage in the locker, however this was not locked and controlled hence anyone can enter at will. However a convenient stay for accessing coral view beach, a very good snorkelling site.

Best location, best service
I've been to other hotels in the Island and definitely the Barat is the best one: - Best location in the Island. Walking distance to several beaches and restaurants. Kayak and taxi boats always available next to the hotel - Small but clean room with AC and fan - Great service, the front desk girls are really nice and always trying to help - Free beach towels - The food in the restaurant is really good. Great breakfast options! (You can use credit card)

superb except for dying seas...
I cannot fault the attitude of the staff nor the service levels at Barat. My concern is how much coral has died and sea life has disappeared in recent years. What to do?

The BBQ is okay. The rooms are not clean. The septic tank is right in front of the aircon, it smell very bad in the room so. Unbearable. Ants everywhere even in the fridge. The floor looks soft and rotten somewhere..

We had the dorm room for 4 persons. We were extremely happy with the condition of the room. It was extremely clean. Towels, comfortable linen and water were provided and replaced/cleaned every day. Aircon works well. We had private toilets but were located outside the room. The cleanliness of the toilets could be improved. The staff were very helpful and quick to solve the issues we had with the safe. However, for the price we paid, we are satisfied with our stay overall. The atmosphere of the resort is pretty quiet at night. If you are looking for some nightlife (fireshow, cheaper food etc), I suggest staying on Long Beach. Otherwise, it is 10RM per way for a water taxi to long beach, and the price doubles at night. Food around Barat were more expensive than the small island. There are no nice sandy beaches within walking distance from Barat, which was quite disappointing.

Rooms and bathroom were good. No beach to swim. All the hotels/resorts on the Perhentian Islands are constantly burning their waste, including fresh cut grass and leaves. Wherever you go, you're in the smoke. Someone needs to teach them about composting and nature preservation. There is plastic waste everywhere.

I want to be fair: good food, ok room, great location with a sea view and 24/7 electricity. The larger 3 bed family rooms had AC and were right on the sea whereas the others were a few meters behind with (mine had no AC). Ok for the price of 400 ringgits for two nights which included a return speedboat, meals and a snorkelling trip. Would recommend caution however due to bed bugs in my room.

Fine for a night or two
Busy but pretty little place. The hotel is clean and restaurant offers some good Malaysian dishes. Staff are polite enough but don’t expect many smiles or too much help. They appear to be used to a high turnover of guests. Having said that, it felt safe to stay there and the rooms were confortable.

Really nice well located hotel
Our room with a detached an suite was clean. We were about 10mins walk from an amazing beach (supposedly the best beach on the island). The staff were also very helpful and knowledgeable.

Do not stay here and especially do not go snorkeling with their people by the pier. They say there is a tv, but it's useless as its not setup for reception. WiFi is nonexistent in the room. Almost nonexistent by the restaurant too with so many people trying to use it. These islands are also incredibly boring as you are literally stuck in the vicinity of the resort.

Lovely hotel near city center
Very nice & clean room & friendly & helpful staff. Good WiFi. Free sodas in mini bar. I was so happy to arrive at a nice Joel after a 13 hr bus ride. I checked in at about 2:45 AM, and it was no problem. If I had to find a complaint it would apply to most “high end” hotels. That’s the price of other amenities. When I saw the laundry charges, I passed. They were prohibitively expensive. Otherwise this is a great hotel for the price. I will be going back there for my last 3 nights in KL.

The hotel was beautiful, however the food from the resort took too long to arrive (30mins) despite not busy. There were some machinery noises at the surrounding area make it hard to fall asleep. However, the snorkeling trip was spectacular, experienced divers and beautiful corals. We went to the Thai restaurant next to the resort the food was good.

Snorkeling is great near to resort; trip to shark & turtle points are great (boat guides have good knowledge of sites & we saw turtles & a shark !)

Overall Perfect Stay
The resort was amazingly clean and comfortable. There was a refrigerator, a hairdryer, a huge queensize bed, air-conditioning, a television screen for multimedia, 2 bottles of water, 2 large towels. Thoughtfully put up mosquito nets, and the place was very very clean, even the toilet! There was warm running water for daily showers which were so comforting. I was so appreciative the hotel replaced 2 bottles of water and toilet paper on my 2nd day of stay. There was laundry line to hang wet clothes, and cute deck chairs on my porch. A water-tap where we could wash off sand before entering our accomodation. It was such a pleasant surprise that everything was well thought through. There were some hammocks, and resting chairs, and also the resort restaurant had the deck placed so guests could sit right near the seaside so it was lovely. The staff and also Marina was receptionist and cashier and was very helpful and hospitable. The food, albeit a bit more expensive, was nicely laid out and palatable!! Thank you so much for making my stay so pleasant. It was just perfect.

Nice hotel on the beautiful island
The island is wonderful. Definitely recommended to visit. The hotel is quite OK. Going from the ferry to special ferry stop small boat will pick up. The hotel has nice location but 3-5 minutes walk from beautiful beach with white sand and cleanest water. Everything was quite OK for such price, the room in the bungallow is quite small, but was OK for me. Not sure about hot water, but it seems that there is hot water only in the day. The bath room is very small, so you’d better be prepared. Anyway very good price-quality hotel, definitely recommended.
