University of Michigan Museum of Art

University of Michigan Museum of Art featuring modern architecture as well as a couple

Browse one of the nation’s greatest and oldest university art collections at this museum on the prestigious University of Michigan campus.

The University of Michigan Museum of Art has more than 20,000 artworks from around the world. Wander through its halls to see Western, Asian and African pieces that have been collected over the past 150 years. Modern and contemporary art, photography and design complete the collection.

The interesting building combines the original 1910 building with a 2009 construction, its modern architecture quite distinct on Michigan’s historic campus. Visit the outdoor sculptures and step inside to explore galleries on four floors. Find your favorite artists from diverse periods and geographies.

American art ranges from Hudson River School landscapes to Warhol pop art and Ansel Adams photography. View European pieces from the Renaissance to the 19th century including works by Monet and Delacroix. Picasso’s Two Girls Reading offers bright colors and shapes that stimulate adult appreciation and appeal to kids too.

Study the very large selection of Asian art starting from 3000 BC to modern times. China, Japan, Korea, Southeast Asia, South Asia and the Middle East are represented, with ceramics, textiles, metalwork, religious sculptures and paintings.

African art includes metalwork, masks and personal adornment items. Be sure to see the design collection as well, with American wooden furniture, Pewabic ceramics and stained glass by Frank Lloyd Wright.

Check the schedule of events at the museum. Several temporary exhibitions usually run simultaneously. Join a Sunday guided tour, participate in an artmaking workshop or attend varied activities at a Fridays After Five special evening event.

Preview the works in the museum online or recall your visit by accessing its digital collection. The gallery is open daily except Mondays and is wheelchair accessible. Find parking in municipal lots within a few blocks of the gallery. Museum admission is free, but donations are much appreciated.

Along with your visit to the University of Michigan Museum of Art, enjoy other parts of the campus and the surrounding neighborhoods in Ann Arbor. The museum is just north of the beautiful grassy space of the Law Quadrangle. Spend a few extra minutes viewing the ivy-covered Gothic buildings constructed in 1882 for the prestigious University of Michigan Law School.
