Room#2: The shower was dirty and moldy. The water in the shower would not drain. There was hair in the sink drain. The toilet would not flush properly. One of the beds broke while my husband was putting my 3 year old to sleep. We told the staff on the first night and it didn’t get fixed on our stay. The staff was friendly and the Pub food was good. It is in walking distance of many attractions

A great place to stay!
I have stayed here a few times over the years and have always been happy with this hotel. The beds were comfortable, and the toilet and shower were clean, with plenty of hot water. The room I stayed in, (5), was above the main gate which meant it could be a bit noisy early in the morning, but not too serious. Staying above a bar, can be a bit noisy, but that is only to be expected. The room was very warm, I had to turn the radiator down, not a bad thing. The hotel is situated five minutes walk from the shambles with plenty of bars and traditional pubs. I recommend the Blue Bell, two minutes away, and The Golden Fleece for it's ghosts and entertainment. All in all a very pleasurable stay. I look forward to returning soon.

Check in was fine with friendly staff. Room was very small and basic. The bed was so uncomfortable and hard. We had an upstairs room which backed onto the shisha bar, it was noisy until about 1am but then it did go quiet. I wouldn’t return here even though the one thing it had going for it was the location, It was central to the town centre and within walking distance to everywhere.

My room was just above the outdoor garden at the back.It was very noisy at night and trying to get to sleep was very very difficult. I would not think about staying there again. The reason i booked was the price but next time i will pay a little bit extra to stay somewhere else that is a lot quieter. I would not recommend anybody to stay here.

While the property was relatively clean etc, and the location very central. The location meant the room was very noisy (particularly with garbage collection of bottles at 5am outside the window). We also had a problem with the hot water not working on our second morning and it wasn't able to be fixed for hours so had to have cold showers. The other area we were disappointed with was communication. We tried to call and email to make amendments to our booking before arrival and couldn't get through. Then after check out we realised we had left an item of jewellery in the room but even though we emailed and called multiple times we were unable to get anyone to answer, and left multiple messages.

Hard bed...noisy night...no sleep 😪
Bed was very uncomfortable, mattress was too hard. Things left by past guests in the room. Noise, but expected as in town centre area, however not acceptable was other guests making noise in the hallways well after 1am. Also money was taken out of my account a few days before the stay, which was fine but we expected to pay on check in, do a bit of warning would of been nice Overall not a great stay

Basic - needs a lot of work done
We travelled as a family on Friday to see a show. Firstly the positives - good city centre location and the staff are friendly and a big family. The drawbacks - whilst clean, the furniture is cheap and tatty. The decor is from the 70's at least. For £160, no breakfast included. The towels, 1 per person - were more like hand towels. We asked for an iron and ironing board and whilst an ironing board was located, there was no iron. On trying the hairdryer in the morning, it made a grinding sound and gave off a burning smell. We talked to a taxi driver on the way back to the station who said the owner has lots of other businesses and shops so clearly doing up the property won't be a priority.

Great location, GREAT. Very clean room. Check-in young lady(s) were very helpful. Pub staff and all staff were wonderful. Parking was about 2 blocks away in a multi-level public garage, not a big issue. Good WiFi. good hot water. Quiet room in rear. Walkable to all important city sites. Great micro-brewery a few doors down and great historic pub across the street. The room was VERY tiny, I believe a jail cell is most likely larger. Could use more electrical outlets. I enjoyed my stay and would return. Dan- USA

Good location for centre of York and great to have a car park. Recently decorated. Friendly and helpful staff. Bar quiet after 11.30/12 on the Friday (and wasn't very noisy before that). Nothing fancy, but good for the location/price/being dog friendly.

Good location to walk everywhere. Solo traveller, so not sure what double rooms are like, but mine was ok for me. Only issue is no early check in so had to find a held luggage place, of which there are many close by and only £5, but still a tad inconvenient.

Good value for money
Very convenient location for the city centre and easy to find. Pre-arrival communication was good and late/self check in available. Rooms are simply and adequately equipped. Kettle in room with tea and coffee. Bed comfortable and storage space to hang clothes. Room was impeccably clean. I was really impressed by the excellent level of cleanliness of the room and bathroom. Only thing is that noise does travel through the walls, and the rooms are over a pub. I could hear noise from outside until after midnight, so maybe not a place for light sleepers.

Fine, if you’re a sound sleeper!
About a half-hour walk from the railway station, in quite a nice little community area, away from the main tourist areas, the Watergate is a pub with rooms. It serves meals, but not, as yet, breakfast. The check-in details are incorrect – the mobile phone number belongs to the previous owner – but I gather this is being addressed. Pleasant staff. The room was dated, but all right nonetheless, except for the street noise from passing revellers which went on intermittently until about 4am causing me to have very broken sleep each night. Near the Red Lion – an excellent pub if you like good beer.

The hotel is located across from a shisa lounge which had people partying on a Monday night until 1am. I could hear every word of their conversation. I was on the ground floor and the stairs to the upper rooms were some of the loudest stairs I have heard. I was awoken multiple times during the night by people coming and going. My room was also situated below a bathroom, and at approximately 7am I could hear someone on the toilet and then in the shower, almost as if I was in the room with them. The blinds that covered the window in the room could also not be closed further, thus light from the shisha bar across the road was brightening the whole room, as well as the sun as it rose in the morning. On to cleanliness, the miniature cushions on the bed had white stains on them. The mugs provided were filled with black debris and the base of the shower was similar. There was an excess of dust around the sink, which I noticed as I dropped my toothbrush as was met with a jungle of our grey delight. Overall I would not recommend this hotel.

Brilliant. Arrived and checked in within 5 minutes, rooms were good size, clean and have everything you need. Location was excellent!!! Staff very friendly and my puppy stayed for free! I will be staying here again

The Worst hotel we have ever seen . We didn’t stay we went elsewhere. No window , No bedding just a waterproof mattress wit a sheet and a mattress cover . No fit for purpose. Worse than an Eastern agricultural hostel . Spare toilet rolls were pat used ones at end of hallway . Hotels. Com wanted to give a Full refund but could only offer a partial one in full and final settlement. If we aren’t fully refunded by credit card company who are currently investigating then this will be going to small claims court for full compensation plus claim for stress . Allegedly a refurbished superior room .No breakfast as booked as Kitchen had been closed down. Don’t stay here not fit for purpose
