Taking a trip on this pretty funicular railway is a Wiesbaden essential, and the attractions at the top of the Neroberg make it all the more worthwhile.

The Nerobergbahn is an unusual funicular railway that uses water to weigh down the carriages and push them up and down the Neroberg, Wiesbaden’s scenic mountain. The mountain is a popular daytrip destination for both Wiesbaden residents and tourists. As well as offering beautiful views, its summit is home to a wide selection of attractions. Step inside one of the handsome yellow carriages of the Nerobergbahn and ride to the top in style.

Learn a bit about the history of the Nerobergbahn and you will appreciate its charms all the more. The funicular railway was first established in 1888, and despite the fact that well over 100 years have passed since then, its unusual way of operating remains exactly the same. Although many funicular railways function by striking a balance between the upward and downward carriages, the Nerobergbahn is one of only a few that use water to get the balance just right. The carriage heading down the hill is loaded with water to make it heavier, and this extra weight is used to help the other carriage travel up the hill at the same time. Make the most of the lovely views on the way up, as the journey is very quick, taking less than 5 minutes.

Step out of the carriage and prepare to explore the many sights of the Neroberg. You could easily spend a day just taking in the gorgeous views, picnicking on the grassy slopes and spotting birds along the picturesque walking trails. However, for a more varied daytrip, pay a visit to the stunningly beautiful Russian Orthodox Church located on the mountaintop, or set aside a few hours to splash around in the Opelbad. This heated outdoor pool opened in 1934 and remains a much-loved feature of Wiesbaden.

Come to Wiesbaden in the warmer months to ride the Nerobergbahn. The railway closes for winter. There is a small fee for the trip, and many people choose to only ride the railway in one direction, enjoying a peaceful walk either up or down the mountain.
