Lymm

Travel Guide
Lymm featuring heritage elements
Discover boutiques, cozy pubs and picturesque walking trails in this village set on the banks of the historic Bridgewater Canal.

Lymm is a quintessential Cheshire village set amid a scenic landscape of canals, streams and lush green farmland. Wander its quiet streets, visit traditional pubs and enjoy scenic walks in the lap of nature. Lymm traces its origins back to Celtic times and its name means a place of running water. The Trans-Pennine Trail and the Bridgewater Canal, which provided a vital transportation link during the Industrial Revolution, both pass through the village.

Lymm Cross, a 17th-century sandstone monument, stands in the heart of the village. Note the adjacent stocks, where wrongdoers were once placed and subjected to public humiliation and punishment. Art galleries and independent traders, such as butchers and florists, line the streets. Drop into the Lymm Heritage Centre to see photos and historical exhibits related to the village.

Stroll beneath bridges and pass quaint cottages on a trail that follows the course of the Bridgewater Canal. Meet anglers, bikers and walkers and spot colorful birdlife. Narrowboats cruise along the canal just as they did during its heyday from 1760 to 1830. Canal boat tours are possible from the nearby town of Worsley.

Another popular attraction is Lymm Dam, accessible by foot from the village center via a pathway called the Dingle. The seasonally changing colors of the surrounding foliage is a spectacular sight. Marvel at curious rock formations, visit the centuries-old St. Mary’s Church, and observe kingfishers and squirrels. Spud Wood is also a great place for birdwatching and views that reach as far the Pennines mountains.

Relax and refuel after a day of activities at coffeehouses, fish and chip shops and Asian cuisine restaurants. Experience the fun of a British pub, where locals meet to sip on real ales and feast on classic dishes such as steak and kidney pie.

Lymm is just a 20-minute drive to the east of Warrington. Come from spring to autumn, when temperatures are milder, to make the most of the outdoor activities. The Lymm Duck Race, in Easter, and the Lymm Dickensian Christmas Festival are two events that showcase a thriving community spirit.

"Good standard overall- only slight negative is the fairly nondescript location. Although only 5-10 min walk from Piccadilly station and the Northern Quarter area- felt a bit isolated with not much immediately around it to recommend. Otherwise all good"

"The property itself is clean, tidy and the staff are very helpful. Staff were friendly, price was good, and check in was really efficient. Room was tidy and clean, it just needed that small extra effort to have tea and coffee making facilities in the rooms.
