Among Lappland’s most accessible national parks, this scenic expanse of wilderness marks the beginning of one of Sweden’s most famous hiking trails.

Spanning 30 square miles (78 square kilometers), Abisko National Park is centered on the majestic Abiskojokk River, which spreads out from the southern shore of scenic Lake Torneträsk. Wander along the edges of fjords and waterfalls and through boreal forests. Snow-capped mountain peaks frame the panoramas and birch forest stretching out over the rolling hills.

More people visit Abisko National Park than any other national park in Sweden. From February to September, start your journey at the visitor center, Naturum Abisko, to view informative exhibitions about the park as well as arrange guides for walking tours.

In winter, enjoy cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and dog sledding. The park’s proximity to the Atlantic Ocean gives it a distinctly maritime character, with milder winters and cooler summers than some of the country’s more eastern parks. In summer, hike all night long by the light of the famous midnight sun. Look for unique wildflowers, such as the rare purple Lapp orchid, which only grows in this region. Try to spot some of the park’s wildlife, including Arctic fox, wolverine, elk, reindeer and lemmings.

Take your pick from the park’s variety of different hiking trails, some of which take several days to complete and others that take you through the park’s gorgeous landscapes in only a few hours. The park marks the beginning of the 270-mile (435-kilometer) Kungsleden (King’s Trail), the longest marked trail in the world.

Travel by cable car to the peak of Njulla, the second-highest mountain in the park. During the winter, get an unforgettable glimpse of the breathtaking northern lights at the Aurora Sky Station. In the summer, the same station is a wonderful spot to observe the midnight sun.

Abisko National Park is in the Kiruna municipality, around 59 miles (95 kilometers) from the town center of Kiruna. Abisko is well connected to Kiruna by bus and train, both of which stop in the main village (Abisko Östra) and the start of the Kungsleden (Abisko Turiststation).

See a magnificent perspective on the midnight sun in this stunning national park.
