K&W Ranchita – Ranch living just outside Alpine

K&W Ranchita is a gorgeous 3 bedroom, 2 bath, ranch-style home located 4 miles north of downtown Alpine. This home features beautiful views of Mitre Peak and the Davis Mountains with the convenience of being only minutes from downtown. With a king bed in the primary bedroom and queen beds in each guest room, there is plenty of space to spread out. A home office with amazing north and south views, along with a spacious kitchen make it a wonderful place for groups.

Lie on the hammock under the large covered porch and enjoy the green grass in the fenced in yard. Enjoy early morning walks on the 22 acre property or the low trafficked caliche road. Sit on the front porch and watch the Pronghorn graze across the vast pastures and quail scurry through the yard on the way to the water trough.

McElroy Ranch was a working ranch and was once part of the historic Kokernot Ranch. Owner, Earl McElroy was a member of a pioneer West Texas ranch family and a prominent ranchman. He died in 1954 when he suffered a heart attack while branding cattle.

Currently McElroy Ranch offers a convenient combination of urban amenities and seclusion, with every plot having 10+ acres to homestead and ranch. A great place to raise families, as well as cattle and horses, the home owners work hard to keep the spirit of the historic ranch alive.

Katie & Will (K&W) started their family at McElroy Ranch. A special place for them where they would almost daily bring their three dogs, Wilson, Mia, and Maggie to roam and walk on a friend’s property. In 2019 Will proposed to Katie at the end of Camino Rincon with Mitre Peak in the distance. The couple planned to be married on the plains but with the pandemic they shifted to a more intimate wedding venue on a mountain top in Fort Davis. They moved to the Ranchita in 2020 and soon had a son born at the Big Bend Regional Medical Center in 2021. Dedicated to building an oasis for their son and beloved Saint Bernard Wilson, they installed sod to provide a safe place for their son to take his first steps and Wilson to spend lazy days enjoying the soft grass while Mia and Maggie play and bark at the UPS truck. The couple also brought in Live Oak, Piñon, and Afghan Pine trees to give some shade and expand the greenery for the quail and dogs. They loved taking long walks on the Ranchita that ended with Wilson taking a dip in the water trough to cool off. Sadly the family had to say goodbye to Wilson this year, he was laid to rest under his favorite Live Oak tree where he would stand guard over the Ranchita keeping the homestead safe from Coyotes and tennis balls. Wilson loved greeting people with a big slobbery grin and we’re happy that he will be there to watch over the property and meet all kinds of new people who come to stay in the tranquil home he loved so much.

Guests have access to the entire 22 acres to explore. You’ll see many of the neighbors walking the road in the mornings and evenings.

PETS: This property is pet friendly with a $40 pet fee per reservation. Please do not allow your pets on the furniture, pick up and discard any pet waste in the metal trash bin outside. Also, the desert is home to critters like rattlesnakes and thorny and prickly vegetation. Please keep your eye on your pet while outdoors for their safety.

Greatest dog place ever.
Well designed and decoded house. They do have issues with maintaining the home. Trouble getting cleaning help according to the manager. This did put us off to a shaky start. Our dogs were very happy. They must spend a lot keeping the yard covered in nice grass. The back porch gave them plenty of shad. Loved the peace and quit.

Really wonderful home in West Texas
This home is absolutely perfect - it is clean, comfortable and in a great location for all there is to do in the Chihuahuan Desert. Having a grass backyard is a real plus! The owners have thought of everything to make your stay delightful. This home is so great that we opted to stay home instead of sightseeing as much as we planned.

Quiet & peaceful with amazing sunset/sunrise views
Quiet and peaceful homestead outside Alpine with amazing sunset and sunrise views. Daily visits by a large covey of grouse and occasional road runner. Also visited a few times by a gorgeous 8 point buck. Perfect location for day trips to Marfa, Terlinqua and Big Bend State Park.

Beautiful property, wonderful experience
This house is gorgeous. The fenced yard was a bonus as we have 2 pups who enjoyed playing around. The host provided everything we could have asked for and the bed was extremely comfortable! Great views with picturesque sunsets. We've stayed in our share of hosted homes and this one is hands down the best by far!

Oasis in the Desert
My family and I absolutely LOVED staying at this home in Alpine!! Seriously probably the best home in which we’ve vacationed (and we’ve stayed at many, including several in the Alpine/Fort Davis area). The views were spectacular- only mountains…no houses obstructing views of sunrises / sunsets! The house itself was very comfortable and decorated just lovely! It had literally everything you could need— from kitchen appliances, coffee, spices, hot cocoa, and cans of soup to lots of linens, toilet paper, cotton balls, and an extra toothbrush. I really enjoyed all the natural light from the large windows and the living room and kitchen were so spacious. Baskets of toys were a sweet touch and kept my toddler entertained! Our favorite part of the house was definitely the yard- we spent the majority of our time relaxing and watching the clouds and rain over the mountains—GORGEOUS!! It’s extremely rare to find green grass so far out in West Texas, yet the owners have done a great job keeping an enjoyable lawn! There were corn hole and a volleyball kept in the yard and lots of comfortable outdoor furniture. We enjoyed the nice Bluetooth speaker that was included on the patio! My dog and toddler were in absolute paradise playing and running barefoot in the soft grass. I could go on and on about how great the house / location is, but you’ll just have to come and stay yourself!! :)
