Aurland

With a spectacular scenery of majestic fjords, this Norwegian municipality is a gateway to such outdoor adventures as mountain hikes, kayaking and wildlife spotting.

Experience the untamed beauty of Norway’s fjords when you travel to Aurland. This picturesque municipality encompasses a collection of villages that are surrounded by soaring mountain peaks and lush green valleys that rise up over glass-like water. Thrill to outdoor pursuits, scenic drives and wildlife watching.

Among Aurland’s biggest draws are the magnificent Aurlandsfjord and NaeroyfjordOpens in a new window, the latter a protected UNESCO World Heritage Site. The fjords are the southern arms of the 127-mile (204-kilometre) long Sognefjord, the longest and deepest fjord in Norway. Explore these long, narrow inlets from the comfort of a cruise, which can be arranged from many villages along the Sognefjord, including Flåm and Gudvangen. Paddle a kayak to secluded beaches and walk along waterfront trails.

There are many more walking options in Aurland. Hike in the Aurlandsdalen Valley and enjoy the views of mountain peaks and glaciers. Take a strenuous walk to the summit of Prest Mountain. Stroll up to the Stegastein Lookout for the sweeping panoramas of Aurlandsfjord. Amble along the Royal Post Road, a waterside path between Bleiklindi and Styvi.

Another great way to see the area is with a drive along the Aurlandsfjellet National Tourist Route, a 29-mile (47-kilometre) scenic road through wild landscapes.

More opportunities to discover this beautiful region await at the villages. Stop by Gudvangen, which dates back to the Viking era. Nearby are the labyrinthine Magical White Caves. Go to Flåm and step on board the Flåm Railway. Gaze out of the window at cascading waterfalls and snow-capped peaks as you trundle through the fjord landscape. Visit the hamlet of Undredal, famous for goat cheese and its 12th-century Undredal Stave Church. Experience mountain farming traditions at Otternes Bygdetun.

To get to Aurland, fly to Sogndal Airport and then catch a bus or ferry from there. Alternatively, drive or take the train from OsloOpens in a new window, Norway’s capital. Get around via boat, bus, car and on foot. Stay overnight at cosy hotels and wake up to some of the most spectacular scenery in Norway.

Beautiful location! Arrived on a boat from Flam which was spectacular, next morning went to the Viking village which I would also strongly recommend. If we were to go again I probably wouldn’t get the breakfast at the hotel. The viking rooms are fun, glad I had a sleep mask
