Benalmádena is a municipality in the province of Málaga consisting of three main urban areas: Benalmádena Pueblo, Benalmádena Costa, and Arroyo de la Miel. The city of Málaga is about 12 km to the west, and Marbella is 42 km to the east. The area has grown rapidly in recent decades due to tourism and has become one of the Costa del Sol’s prime locations. Benalmadena Costa is home to most of the area’s attractions, the most notable of which are likely the golden sandy beaches that stretch out into the Mediterranean Sea. There are restaurants and bars to suit all tastes and preferences, and the area maintains a relaxed, friendly atmosphere year-round. With such a wide and varied range of activities and things to do, any visitor will be hard-pressed to find a moment of boredom when visiting Benalmadena, a town that is truly more than just a resort. Places to Visit: A promenade stretches along the coast to Puerto Marina (Marine Port), which boasts excellent shopping and dining. The marina is also home to the Sea Life Centre, home to all manner of marine wildlife, and features its own petting tank where you can get up close and personal with the rays. You can take a stroll to admire the floating hotels and millionaires’ yachts, and when the sun goes down, Puerto Marina becomes one of the coast’s best party destinations. La Paloma Park is a gorgeous spot in the centre of Benalmadena Costa. It features a stunning array of flora and fauna, plus a menagerie of animals including chickens, rabbits, goats, and exotic birds. The park is beautifully landscaped with themed gardens and rocky waterfalls that cascade down to the lake. There are two bars within the park where you can relax into the evening while listening to the calls of peacocks. Next to La Paloma Park, you’ll find Selwo Marina, the sister park to Selwo Adventure Park, located further down the coast. Modelled on various locations in South America, you can get a close-up view of dolphins, sea lions, crocodiles, exotic birds, and snakes. Recently, a penguin habitat was installed, offering a glimpse of Antarctica right here in Andalusia. Arroyo de la Miel—which translates to “Honey Stream”—is a formerly sleepy village that now connects Benalmádena Pueblo to its coastal area. Located right in the heart of the action, it has become a fantastic place to grab a bite to eat and shop to your heart’s content. The train station is located in Arroyo, connecting the town to the entire coastline from Málaga to Fuengirola. Cable cars provide a route to the top of the mountain that connects Benalmádena to the beaches, where you can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views both inland and out to sea—on clear days, you can even see North Africa. You can also enjoy equestrian and raptor shows at the summit. Tivoli World: Opposite the cable car station, you’ll find Tivoli World, a theme park offering a wide variety of attractions. Aside from its multitude of rides and games, there are plenty of bars and restaurants, so there’s always something to do if the log flume or go-karts don’t appeal to you. On Sundays, Tivoli World also hosts a market with all sorts of trinkets, ranging from the ordinary to the bizarre. Benalmadena Pueblo Benalmadena Pueblo is the original village, set back from the coast at the foot of Mount Calamorro at an elevation of about 200 metres. The heart of the village has a traditional Spanish look with whitewashed stone buildings and labyrinthine alleys, though the village now has a much more cosmopolitan feel. Visitors to Benalmádena Pueblo can enjoy fine dining in picturesque squares and breathtaking views of the coast and out across the sea. Mijas Pueblo Mijas Pueblo is just a few minutes away from Benalmádena Pueblo, where a taste of rustic Spain is on offer, complete with shows and donkey treks. Other nearby attractions include Colomares Castle, a tribute to various significant monuments from around the world. Built in the late 20th century, it was erected to commemorate Christopher Columbus’s discovery of the New World; as such, it is the largest monument in the world dedicated to that event. Just outside the town centre, you’ll also find Rancho Domingo, a very exclusive residential community. Cultural Attractions: The Buddhist Enlightenment Stupa is located in Benalmádena Pueblo; at 33 metres tall, it is the largest stupa in the Western world and a point of interest for Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike. Golf Benalmadena has a number of golf courses, putting greens, and driving ranges in the immediate vicinity. Benalmadena Golf features a driving range, a putting green, and a straightforward 9-hole par-3 course. It has an excellent clubhouse with a restaurant and a bocce court. The nearest 18-hole course is Torrequebrada Golf, which offers a challenge for players of all skill levels. Although located in an urban area, the surrounding pine trees provide seclusion, and some of the views are spectacular. Cuisine: Benalmadena’s cuisine is wide and varied, with restaurants offering everything from traditional local dishes—featuring plenty of seafood and rice on the menu—to just about anything else you could possibly wish for. There are a great number of tapas bars, restaurants, and cafés in Benalmadena. Some more traditional bars will often serve you a small portion of tapas for free with a caña (small beer). Benalmadena Costa’s seaside location makes it home to chiringuitos (beach bars) where you can watch the fishing boats—which have often caught the very fish you’re eating. Climate: Benalmadena enjoys a subtropical Mediterranean climate, with hot summers and warm winters. Cooling breezes from the sea make the summer heat bearable; average temperatures reach 32 °C in the summer. Málaga Airport has a train station that connects to the Benalmadena metro station.
