We stayed at the Japanese style house and it was amazing! It was huge and perfect for a family. It also has private indoor and outdoor onsen included in the accommodation just for us. The meals included were great as well, we had teppanyaki for dinner and Japanese breakfast. The accommodation is also close to the Hell's onsen attraction which is just minutes walk away so it's perfect for my parents. The only thing was the outdoor onsen was slightly too hot for us as you cannot adjust the water temperature. Other than that everything was great!

Had a spectacular stay with wife. Awesome hotel room and excellent food. Staff are courteous and helpful. It’s close to the famous onsen sightseeing spot so it’s easy to navigate around. There’s nothing much to shop around though.

Amazing stay! Great facilities and a private hot spring bath in the room! Loved this hotel. Impeccable and friendly staff who greets you at every instance.Thoroughly impressive food service to boot - food that looks beautiful and tastes divine.

We were picked up by a large shuttle van and greeted by hotel staff outside the front entrance. Taken inside and given an orientation and given oolong tea to drink. Our bags were taken to our rooms while we were being educated by the night manager. Our dinner was an excellent teppanyaki dinner with yagyu steak. The private onsen bath and our room was totally excellent!! I would love to come back in the future!

This was our first ryokan experience and it was great. Staff was very friendly. Pickup & drop off at JR station was included. The view was great and the room we reserved has private indoor/outdoor onsens. Expect to do a bit of walking on the property, but it’s located next door to the “7 Jigoku of Beppu”, a great geological park.

The rooms are very dated, and smell bad to the point it’s hard to sleep. And to add to it there was an enormous spider that was climbing around the room. It was the size of my hand. Paying around $800/night one would expect more peace. The dinner and breakfast was good, but nothing too special. I had to book a different hotel to sleep at for the second night of our stay, at around $200 and it was much nicer inside. I don’t ever complain about rooms and have stayed at many ryokans across Japan but this was simply not comfortable. I know it’s an old place in a great location but I want to keep it real for anyone else looking to splurge on an expensive stay like this.

Excellent!!! Loved our stay. Our room was so big and spacious. It was a traditional Japanese room. It was located right on top on the pond. The private onsen was heaven. We reserved for teppanyaki dinner and it was so delicious. Breakfast was excellent as well. The staff are so nice. We received free taxi ride to and from the station. The taxi driver was so nice as well. He was like a personal tour guide for the whole ride. Thank you so much and would love to stay here again.

The staff is friendly and helpful, truly at your service. The onsen is beautiful in every way; architecture, landscaping, decor. Walk to a couple of the Jigoku.

Exceeded All Expectations!
Hands down the best of the best! My stay was nothing short of perfect! The customer service, the room, the private Onsen, the cleanliness, the details... Every need was met. I thought this hotel would be out of the way, but surprisingly and luckily the bus stop was a stone throw away. I walked to a nearby restaurant as well which was great. Jumped on the bus to the African Safari and just enjoyed myself touring. I didn't want to leave when it was time and I can't wait to visit again.

Very nice and modern hotel. Everything from the room to the restaurant without forgetting the onsen is there to make you relax. Gorgeous views of steaming Beppu.

The hotel is massive. I did not get to go to every place due to the fact that I have tattoos. I stayed in the room with its private onsen with was amazing and totally worth it. I got the steak dinner which was delicious. The hotel provided a yukata to wear around the hotel grounds which is always nice. However, if you do not speak Japanese it can be a little difficult to communicate but it was very hospitable. The location is also perfect to site see the 7 Hells of Beppu.

Kannawaen is well located in a good area with plenty of restaurants. The hotel is big, clean and quiet and the services is top notch. My room is large with private onsen and balcony. Breakfast and dinner are also excellent.

This hotel is amazing. The private in room/open air onsen was fabulous! We thoroughly enjoyed the ambiance of the hotel grounds and when we come back to visit Beppu, we will surely stay here again!

Amazing stay! Staff were multilingual and very welcoming and helpful as well. Right from the start we were treated superbly and the rooms were clean and comfortable. There is a turndown service where hotel staff converts the tatami room from a living room to a bedroom by setting up our futons for us. The room also has a private onsen that you can enjoy without having to share with others. That being said, the public onsen is not to be missed! However during my stay, it seems like the outdoor onsen was closed which was slightly disappointing. Also worth noting was that the staff really go out of the way in helping guests. After we checked out, we faced some problems with our rental car and the staff made the effort in helping us contact the rental car company and liase with the insurance provider as well. While we were held up, we were even invited to the bar lounge to rest and were even provided with free coffee which was a very nice gesture. PS the teppanyaki dinner is definitely worth a try!

If Heaven Were a Hotel...This Would Be It...
We had an absolutely fabulous stay. It was a highlight of our trip. You could see my mother's stresses melt away from the minute she walked through the doors - and after an in-room massage and soak in our private onsen she had the best sleep of her life. My friend said Kannawaen "ruined her for any other hotel" as she is convinced none will make her feel the way she did there. It was elegant yet comfortable. So relaxing as only the Japanese know how to create such peaceful surroundings. The service was excellent - five star all the way around. I would highly recommend Kannawaen. If heaven were a hotel, this would be it...
