ROSTHERNE HOUSE
Step into the past at Rostherne House — a lovingly preserved late-1800s weatherboard home, nestled on seven private acres at the edge of Blackheath village. Owned by the same family for over 120 years, this remarkable property is rich in history, nostalgia, and timeless charm. More than just a holiday stay, Rostherne is an old-world experience where simplicity reigns and the echoes of the past live on.
Set in a large U-shaped layout, Rostherne remains largely as it was decades ago, with original features, antique furniture, and shelves lined with vintage books. The house sleeps up to fifteen guests across eight character-filled bedrooms. Many of the beds are original and vintage, with basic but comfortable mattresses dressed in hotel-quality linen. All rooms have electric blankets (except for the top bunks), individual heaters, and plenty of extra blankets to ensure a cosy night's sleep.
The rustic kitchen retains its authentic charm while offering the basics for self-catering. A vintage wood-burning stove stands proudly beside a modern electric cooktop and microwave — providing everything you need to prepare a simple meal.
The sitting and dining room is a cosy retreat, warmed by a slow-burning fireplace and featuring a flat-screen TV. After a day exploring the Blue Mountains, gather at the eight-seater dining table for a hearty meal, or wind down with free-to-air TV and the soft glow of the fire.
Long hallways lead to the large family room — a magical gathering space warmed by a second fireplace. Here you’ll find a vintage ping pong table, piano, board games, puzzles, and a chess set, all set against views of the expansive garden. It’s the perfect place to reconnect, relax, and share slow, simple moments.
Bathroom and laundry facilities are located just to the right of the front entrance, adjoined to the main house and only a few metres away. Access is via external doors — a charming nod to the home’s heritage. The first room is a full bathroom with clawfoot bath, shower, toilet, and basin. The second room contains a separate shower, the third is the laundry, and behind the laundry sits another separate toilet.
Outside, a wide verandah wraps around half the house and offers the ideal spot to sip tea, watch birdlife, or simply enjoy the serenity of your bush surrounds. Wander the overgrown garden paths and trails through native flora — you may even discover the remains of the original tennis court hidden in the trees.
In summer, the home remains cool and comfortable. In winter, expect the house to be cold on arrival, but once the fireplaces are burning and heaters are on, the bedrooms and living spaces become warm and welcoming.
Rostherne House is not a modern or luxurious escape. There’s no dishwasher, no central heating, and the home proudly wears its quirks. But for those drawn to history, solitude, and the romance of simpler times, it offers something rare and unforgettable — an experience steeped in character, peace, and a deep sense of place.
