About this property

A Historic Icelandic Lakeside Home, where nature and people reconnect

  • Solhaven – A Historic Icelandic Home by the Lake

Overlooking the tranquil waters of Lake Þingvallavatn, just 10 km from Þingvellir National Park, Solhaven is a carefully preserved historic Icelandic home with its own story, character and rhythm. Open to only a limited number of guests each year, it offers something increasingly rare: the chance to slow down and experience Iceland from the comfort of a real home rather than a hotel.

Originally built in Reykjavík, the cottage was carefully relocated to its present lakeside setting more than forty years ago. We have preserved its authentic soul while adding the comforts needed for a relaxing stay. Every weathered timber, every window framing the changing skies, tells part of its story.

For us, luxury is found in simplicity: waking to complete silence, watching mist rise from the lake with your morning coffee, returning from hikes through lava fields, mountains and highlands to the warmth of a wood-burning fireplace, and ending the day with nowhere else you need to be.

The surrounding landscape is one of Iceland's most remarkable. Lake Þingvallavatn, the country's largest natural lake, changes with every season and every shift in light. Scenic drives, peaceful walks, spectacular hikes, birdlife, fishing and hidden viewpoints reward travellers who choose to stay longer rather than simply pass through.

Whether you arrive as partners, lifelong friends, siblings, a parent and adult child, or simply in search of solitude, Solhaven invites you to reconnect with nature, with yourself and with each other.

Each season offers a different experience: endless summer evenings, colourful autumn landscapes, the Northern Lights dancing across winter skies, and the quiet renewal of spring.

Our commitment is simple: a warm welcome, thoughtful communication, local recommendations and a home prepared with care. We hope you leave with more than beautiful photographs. We hope you leave with the feeling that, for a little while, you were not simply visiting Iceland—you were living here.

Solhaven is located in a peaceful community of traditional Icelandic summer cottages on the shores of Lake Þingvallavatn. For generations, Icelanders have come here to escape everyday life—to spend time with family and friends, fish in the lake, work on their cottages and enjoy nature. As our guest, your fishing permit for Lake Þingvallavatn is included throughout your stay.

The landscape is open, wild and ever-changing. Gentle hills, volcanic mountains, lava fields and Iceland's largest natural lake create an extraordinary setting for exploring at your own pace. Walking trails begin at the doorstep, from short evening strolls to full-day hikes near the lake. Rich birdlife and ever-changing light make every season unique.

Just 10 km away lies Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates slowly drift apart. Explore dramatic rift valleys, crystal-clear springs and one of the world's oldest parliamentary sites.

Solhaven is perfectly positioned for exploring the Golden Circle. Visit the erupting hot springs of Geysir, the mighty Gullfoss waterfall, unwind at Laugarvatn Fontana or taste traditional rye bread baked underground using geothermal heat. The lively market town of Selfoss is nearby, while Reykjavík—with its museums, Harpa Concert Hall, vibrant cultural scene and whale-watching excursions—is just a scenic one-hour drive away.

Many visitors arrive with a full itinerary. Here, Iceland often has other plans. Let the weather guide your day, linger a little longer by the lake and discover why this corner of Iceland has inspired rest, renewal and a deep connection with nature for generations.
