Typical Madeiran House - 23919 / AL

A typical wooden house restored according to original detail and construction materials. The house was built in the 30's and fully restored in 1999.
The kitchen has a common dining area with a large table. There is a wooden stove as well as an electric cooking station and oven. There is also a microwave and dishwasher. The living room has a cozy fireplace and is equipped with a television and portable IPOD docking station. Several books are available with information about wood, walks and cultural patrimony. Downstairs there is also a hall and a small bathroom with a shower.
The main bedroom upstairs is typical wood style with a double bed, bed-side tables, a chest of drawers and large wardrobe. The bedroom in the attic is a mezzanine and has two single beds. Both bedrooms have air-conditioning as well as the upstairs bathroom which also has a large tub and hair dryer.
The outside area has a very welcoming social area with a large wooden table and a fully equipped barbecue. There are also two sunbeds available. Views of the rolling hills and sea are spectacularly set in peaceful, calm rural scenery.
Behind the house there is a laundry station with a washing machine and a place for drying.
Car rental is highly recommended.
The town center has 3 small restaurants a few basic grocery stores. The locals are friendly and approachable.

A lovely, quite remote, quiet spot. Very attractive 'cottage, very clean and well equipped. Good restaurants in local village. Just remember most Madeira Roads are 'quite bendy' All together a very enjoyable break

Wonderful peace of mind
We enjoyed every moment in Roberto and Fiona's wonderful old Madeiran house. The sunsets are spectacular and can be seen from the terrace while making something on the bbq next to it. Roberto welcomed us with plenty of food to start off and gave us wonderful tips for restaurants and the environs. We can highly recommend their beautiful house for anyone who is looking to step away from their everyday busy life. The town is a bit remote, and you definitely will need a car to be able to shop in the closest supermarket which is 20 mins away. There are wonderful walks to be done nearby and plenty of beautiful nature to enjoy. We loved it. Sabine & Scott

Exactly what we were looking for
Roberto was a pleasure and casa Amarella was beautiful. We loved the rural setting and old time charm of the property. Fresh bread, fruits and provisions welcomed us when we arrived. We look forward to returning.

words do not describe
What a gem! We felt we were in a different world and time the moment we walked into this "typical Madeiran home". We were stunned by the view of the ocean and spent a good portion of our time staying "home" on the terrace overlooking the pasture toward the sea. You can feel the love that has been put into this home. Roberto met us to show us around and left treats of fruit, bread, cheese and wine. The view is hard to describe other than to stay it is spectacular. Sunsets were breathtaking! Total peace and quiet here. We became very fond of the two cows across the pasture and loved hearing their occasional moo-ing. Otherwise, all you will hear are the birds, bees on the bougainvillea trellis. If you are looking for a place to appreciate the heart of rural Madeira, a place to unwind and yet venture out either by car or foot, I full-heartedly recommend Roberto's and Fiona's home. We enjoyed several dinners on the terrace at O Farolim just minutes away in Ponto do Pargo. If you rent a car, I would suggest making certain it is not too low to the ground since the driveway can be challenging to enter and leave. We chose Madeira because we were thinking we would walk the levadas but we found it much more interesting to walk from the house down the hill and meander through the tiny streets and boroughs around the farms. We enjoyed talking to local people who could understand or speak some english and learned so much more about the culture and history this way. This western tip of Madeira is farm country yet you are not far from many points of interest by car. It took us about 1hr, 30 minutes from airport which is on the opposite tip of the island- a drive that is mostly on highways but the last 20 minutes or so are small local roads- up and down switchback. Not difficult once you get used to it. Thank you, Roberto and Fiona, for a most memorable vacation in Portugal. Will suggest your home to anyone traveling to Madeira.

Magic, more than the pictures could say
Never in my life have I been to a rental house like this. It was so charming and well equipped. The garden was lovely and every evening we sat on the terrace watching the sun go down in the ocean. Roberto was the sweetest host!

Top class
A wonderful house, peaceful location away from the hustle and bustle. A lovely welcome, generous treats on arrival, good communication, house beautifully decorated and very well equipped. Fascinating drives, walks, viewing points all very local. Good wifi. Endless hot water. The views! This home and the experience we had sets the standard for other holiday home rentals. Highly recommended

A delightful cottage in a marvellous position
The cottage is beautifully situated at the quieter end of the island: from the spacious terrace there are fine views of the sea but the position is tranquil and secluded, overlooking a colourful garden and a private vineyard on the slopes below. Inside its character has been carefully preserved, with an impressive kitchen range and some fine antique furniture. Don't expect stainless steel - the sink is original too, but there's all the modern equipment you need. Like many others on the island the road leading down to the house is narrow and quite steep. The welcome we received was exceptional: Roberto met us, explained everything and made sure we had provisions to start us off as well as local fruit and wine. The house was full of fresh flowers and immaculately presented. We were able to enjoy a roaring log fire in the evenings. There are lovely walks close by including levadas not far away. Good restaurants are quite close and the road tunnels get you to Funchal in little over an hour - it will be faster next year. But this location is best for those who enjoy peace and quiet as well as lovely scenery and an old, slightly quirky house. We certainly did and strongly recommend it to those who like the same.

serene beauty
We stayed two weeks in this beautiful house, with the great seaview. It was just what we needed: peace and quiet, the only question every day being: do we stay here, or are we going to do something? The thing being either the beach or walking one of the meny levada-walks close by, or maybe just the almost 40-minute walk to one of the restaurants in the village. Roberto and Fiona decorated their home with pride and joy, just for us, with fresh flowers everywhere and the odd visit bringing wine and bread. The home itself is a beauty, the terrace is great.

magical place
Had a wonderful 10 days in this beautiful property. Wonderful views, very peaceful location and beautifully restored comfortable house where you can immediately feel 'at home'. There were beautiful wild flowers in the lanes and the garden was lovely. Roberto is an exceptional host who made us feel very welcome and ensured we had all we needed to start our holiday. A 20 minute walk along the old road brings you into the town, near a café/restaurant that serves very tasty and good value home cooked meals. There is a nearby levada that you can access without needing to drive, whilst other levadas are within 30 minutes drive. So some great walks followed up by sitting on the patio with a glass of maderian wine watching the amazing sunsets! Highly recommended.

Super Haus
