  • We spent yesterday arvo bush-bashing down to the Zig Zag Railway viaducts above Lithgow, NSW and looking around the place for a few hours.

In this shot you can see the No. 1 Viaduct on the Top Road track. A little further down is the larger No. 2 Viaduct. And on the Bottom Road (which is the train line near the bottom of this pic) is the No. 3 Viaduct.

Comprising rock cuttings, classical sandstone viaducts and tunnels, the Lithgow Zig Zag was, and remains to this day, a magnificent piece of engineering. Construction of this part of the rail system began in 1866 and was completed by the late 1890s. The line was decommissioned in 1910 with the construction of the Ten Tunnels deviation which is still in use today by state rail.

Back in the early 1970s, volunteers worked to bring the line back into operation as an iconic tourist railway which ran for decades, bringing with it tourism dollars to the wider Lithgow area.

In 2013, a huge bushfire swept through the area and destroyed a lot of the infrastructure and equipment used by the Zig Zag Railway. Since that day work has proceeded to slowly bring the tourist train line back into operation It is hoped it'll be up and running again in the next year or so.

We had a very funny night here. The publican (ames) was a crack up and I loved his snowy white beard.. The open fires were so comforting after a really cold day and it was nice to have electric blankets on the bed. The food was great and the bar staff were great fun as well. Thankyou guys for a very memorable night and we will be back.. Cheers Mazz,,John, Glynn and Emma Vassallo

Never heard of the area, let alone the great pub and staff. Food was amazing and huge meals ,best pub feed in years . Nice warm fire places in the pub ,locals were cool as . Had a nice comfortable room for a good price and quiet upstairs with no noise at all coming from a good crowd there on Friday night at Saturday night.Bathroom and shower area was smick and lots of body wash and nice fresh smelling shower products. Thanks to all the staff and management,we will definitely be back and recommend it to anyone and everyone we know.Cheers Matt and Bec .

Historic hotel with 5 fireplaces, superb food, timber bar and just generally a nice family feel, Electric blankets are very warm, sheets crisp and towels very white. Simple breakfast included with nice balconies and north side garden. Went for a short 5 min walk and saw ten kangaroos, Took a great photo of the hotel from the front.but no way to share here. Hope the front balcony damagefrom the wayward car is fixed soon. Finally, we stayed at Royal Capertee on our way to visit the oil shale works and we’re not disappointed with the 2 hour tour.
