Casalarreina (formerly Nafarruri or “House of the Queen”) has a history with Roman-medieval roots, mentioned in documents from 1070 and developed around the infrastructure linked to the Monastery of Nuestra Señora de la Piedad, founded in 1514 by Bishop Juan Fernández de Velasco and consecrated by Pope Adrian VI in 1522. It is the only Spanish monastery inaugurated directly by a pope.
