THE SHAY INN A historic 3-bedroom, 2-bath home (sleeps 8) in the heart of Cass Scenic Railroad State Park. Sleeping arrangements include a queen (BR #1), full (BR #2), full (BR #3), plus sleeper sofas in both the den and living room. Built in 1911 using timber from the former Cass mill, The Shay Inn reflects the town's roots as a turn-of-the-century logging community and is named in honor of the old dining car that the current owner's family ran during the early days of Cass's transition from lumber town to tourist destination. Step outside to the 78-mile Greenbrier River Trail, walk to the Cass Scenic Railroad Depot, or visit the Cass Company Store and its welcoming in-house dining at The Last Run Restaurant, a favorite stop for hearty meals after a day in the mountains. Nearby highlights include the Green Bank Observatory a 10 minute drive and Snowshoe Mountain Ski Resort, just 15 minutes from the property. No air conditioning, but fans are provided. We loved the property; there were 6 of us staying for a few day ski trip and celebrating our daughter's 18th birthday. The house is very welcoming, comfortable, and charming. The house was very clean and warm after a cold day of skiing:). We brought in our food which worked out perfectly as there are no real food markets near by. The kitchen is well stocked, the beds were very comfortable, the rooms spacious. The location worked well, snowshoe is only 15-20min drive away, and there is a lovely river behind the property with a trail. We loved the Cass store and it's old world charm. The hosts are very responsive and helpful with information about the house and the area.

This is a nice rustic property in a historical setting.
Good for large groups who can tolerate imperfect housing. Old and creaky. Odd pantry/bath layout. Dated appliances kicked breaker. DW ancient. Two of four good beds. Inclosed porch a plus for bikes and such. Furnature otherwise good.
We enjoyed our stay in the former company town of Cass. The house felt like staying in our grandmother's house. It was very well equipped. Many of the kitchen utensils and pans looked brand new. We had everything we needed to eat in. The evenings cooled off, so the lack of a/c was not a problem. Internet worked great. The two living areas were very nice - plenty of room in one for all of us, but space to spread out if needed. Kitchen table was great for meals and playing games.

First the the good. The interior is clean and my wife calls it cozy. It is spacious and comfortable. The down side are the systems. The house is in need of a repairman to fix a number of items Each by themselves is not bad but in total it was annoying and should not exist at the price charged.
The entrance gates was full of lichens dust the flagstone needs sweeping the porch rails are dirty and the porch is in need of paint. On the inside some electric outlets provide no contact to plugs. the kitchen sink faucet has a loose base. The lamp in the northwest bedroom is broke, loose wires. Should not be used. The dishwasher did not pump out on the last cycle and flooded the floor. The front porch needed sweeping. I repaired the flapper valve of the upstairs toilet tan with a wire tie. Need a stainless wire, as my fis will soon rust through.
I felt I should have brought my tools and start fixing things.
We went skiing at Snowshoe and this place was the perfect mix of amenities and affordability. The inn has a vintage and cozy feel to it, with lots of bedding options for large group. Highly recommend!
This house is convenient for Cass, and comfortably slept 5 adults and 2 children with the 3 bedrooms and pull out couch. Keyless entry was great, the wifi was super fast, and beds were comfy. Very close to Greenbrier trail & river for hiking and fishing.

We were very pleased with our stay at the Shay Inn. We were safe, comfortable and were able to spend many pleasant hours at the Inn. The size of the property gave us plenty of room to have alone time, while providing us a place to gather when we wanted. We cooked, we slept, we cooked, we enjoyed the local scenery and activities, we cooked and we spent many hours around the pretty dining room playing games which mom (me) won. We loved our stayed, enjoyed meeting our neighbots and we hope to return soon!
The house is old but everything functions well. Cobwebs in the ceiling corners.

Our family of 4 stayed at the Shay Inn to ski at Snowshoe, which was about a 20 min. drive. The house was warm and spacious, beds comfortable, but the towels were old and some were not washed at all, but put away dirty or left in the closet dirty. Thankfully, there is a washer and dryer, which we used. The house is an old country house, which is fine, but it has not been updated and was not very clean.
Enjoyed staying in this great old house. Fortunately it was not hot-no AC. Opened windows and ran fans which kept house cool and removed musty odor when we arrived-no big deal. The only cleanliness issue was with cob webs. I removed one which was from DR door by kitchen to rear window and several were on fans. Again not a big deal. We only stayed 3 days, rode the train, saw the telescope, explored waterfalls and there was still more things we could have done. Will have to stay longer next time. Thanks again for allowing us to stay in the home. I might suggest placing some window AC units fo the real hot days/nights.

The rental experience itself was perfectly fine - Mountain Valley Realty is helpful and very easy to work with. We stayed her for a ski trip, saving money over being on the mountain at Snowshoe. The house is older and furnished like an older house, but all of the amenities worked just fine. We fit 4 adults and 5 kids without issue (2 kids in beds, 2 on pull-out sofas, and 1 on a couch). Internet works very well; the TV is small. Only 1 bathroom upstairs with the bedrooms; the other is downstairs attached to the kitchen/pantry. Snowshoe is only about 20 minutes away, so much closer than staying in Elkins, but more schlep than staying on the mountain.

First of all, our stay was timed perfectly to enjoy all the beautiful fall colors. The sound of the steam train whistles just added to the flavor of our stay. The Inn was delightful. Clean, comfy and with plenty of room for the four of us to be together, yet enjoy quiet alone time. The inn was well stocked with everything we needed to prepare meals. We especially enjoyed the dining room where we shared meals and had great fund playing games. (I won!) We sure hope we can return.

We loved The Shay Inn. It was clean, cozy and perfectly located for our weekend at Cass. It has all the comforts of home and more!
House was great We had the town mostly to ourselves I think because it was during the week. House is big and very comfortable felt like I was at home. We didn't know we did not have to bring anything. They had everything you could think of that you would need. The fans were great but AC in one room would have been nice after hot days riding the trains. Only cleaning issue was a lot of cobwebs especially on the stairs. I didn't realize we would not have cell phone service to call out but that wasn't really an issue since the wifi was great. Overalll a 5 star stay.
