Explore the magnificent gardens, palaces, salons and theater of this Renaissance castle complex, which looms over Český Krumlov’s historic center.

Relive the lavish lifestyles of influential, noble and venerable Czech families at Český Krumlov Castle. Visit opulently decorated rooms, admire portrait galleries, stroll amid manicured gardens and spot bears. Český Krumlov Castle dates back to the 13th century, when it was established by the Lords of Krumlov. It has been a residence of the aristocratic Rosenberg, Habsburg and Schwarzenberg families.

The entire castle complex covers an area of 17 acres (7 hectares) and consists of 40 buildings set around five courtyards. Stroll between the courtyards and marvel at the fusion of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architectural styles. Imagine a time when the complex was a center for the arts, economy and politics of Bohemian aristocracy.

To experience the majestic beauty of the building’s interiors, join one of the guided tours. Take a journey through the castle’s Renaissance and Baroque rooms, a masquerade hall and St. George’s Castle Chapel. Another tour concentrates on the history of the Schwarzenberg family and includes a visit to an exquisite portrait gallery. The third tour takes you on a behind-the-scenes visit to the Castle Theater.

Learn more about the lives and events of the castle at a well-presented museum. Climb the 162 steps to the top of the Castle Tower to enjoy uninterrupted views over Český Krumlov’s rooftops. Find collections of antique statues and exhibits of modern art in the castle’s cellars. Don’t miss the moat, which continues an 18th-century tradition of bear-keeping.

Walk around the castle’s pristine garden, established in the 1600s. Gaze in awe at the perfectly groomed lawns and hedges interspersed by paths and ornamental fountains. Look for a music pavilion adorned with a mural by Czech painter František Jakub Prokyš.

Garden visits and guided tours in English are available from April to October. The main cellar, museum and tower are open year-round. Admission is free to the garden while other areas have fees. Visit the castle’s official website for more information.

Reach Český Krumlov Castle by a 10-minute walk from Český Krumlov’s main square, Náměstí Svornosti.
