Go snorkeling in the blue-green water to see the spectacular array of colorful aquatic creatures at one of the island’s most picturesque beaches.

Among the most scenic spots on the island of Vanuatu, Champagne Beach comprises a stretch of white, powdery sand flanked by green tropical vegetation and clear, aquamarine water. The bay is protected by forest-covered cliffs, which provide shady spots and keep the beach sheltered from wind.

Swim with your friends in the clean, warm water. It is shallow with a gentle incline, making the area safe for kids. Snorkel to enjoy glimpses of the colorful fish beneath the surface. Catch views of Elephant Island on the horizon.

Join vacationers playing cricket and soccer on the sand. Purchase T-shirts, sarongs and other souvenirs from the small hut run by a local vendor. The beach contains several empty shacks where you can get changed and take shelter from the sun.

Hike along the trails of the surrounding jungle terrain and look for a range of exotic plants and animals. Spot the crabs burrowing into their homes in the sand. Make sure to bring sufficient water and food for the trip, as the beach has relatively few amenities or shops.

Consider the origin of the beach’s name. Some suggest it comes from the appearance of the effervescent foam at low tide. Others claim the coastline is shaped like an old-fashioned champagne flute. Another theory suggests gas escaping from the volcanic rock climbs to the surface to make oily, bubbly water.

Arrive early for the sunrise, when you may have the sands to yourself. The beach is open at all times and free to visit. Be aware of the cruise ship schedule, as the beach may be particularly busy on days when the ships are in port.

Champagne Beach is on the northeastern flank of the Espiritu Santo island in Vanuatu. The north-facing bay overlooks Hog Harbour and is 9 miles (14 kilometers) south from Port Olry. Arrive from other parts of the island via a boat or cruise. Visit nearby attractions, such as Lonnoc Beach, Hog Harbour and Golden Beach.
