Cristo de la Concordia

A cityscape with a mix of high-rise buildings and smaller houses, surrounded by green hills and a cloudy sky.
A large white statue with outstretched arms, set against a partly cloudy sky.
A large white statue of a figure with outstretched arms, surrounded by trees and a stone plaque.
A field of yellow flowers with green foliage.
A stone plaque with a statue of a figure, engraved with text and measurements.

Similar to Rio de Janeiro’s iconic Christ the Redeemer, this enormous statue of Christ stands high above the city of Cochabamba.

Gaze up at Cristo de la Concordia, with its arms outstretched and eyes looking across the Andean mountain peaks. The figure has the appearance that it is embracing the city of Cochabamba. Standing at the top of San Pedro Hill, the statue is visible from across Cochabamba. The statue reaches a height of just over 112 feet (34 meters), with slightly more than one meter for each year of Jesus Christ’s life. In an attempt to become the world’s tallest statue of Jesus, the designers indicated that the additional height was due to the fact that Jesus died when he was 33 and a bit.

Choose from several options to reach the statue. Drive or take a taxi to the top of the hill. Ride the cable car that climbs San Pedro Hill to take in the stunning views with very little exertion. If you’d like some exercise, ascend the 1,250 steps that lead to the statue’s base. Be alert while climbing the mountain as robberies have been reported.

Visit on a Sunday to continue your climb to the observation level within Cristo de la Concordia. For a small fee you’ll be led through the statue to the viewing platform housed within the statue’s head and above its outstretched arms. Admire the panoramic views of Cochabamba and the surrounding fertile valley. Look for the Tunari mountain range that dominates the horizon.

Cristo de la Concordia is located just east of the city on San Pedro Hill. A cable car runs from the city to the base of the statue. Pay a fee for riding the cable car and also for climbing inside the statue, which is generally possible on Sundays. Taxis will happily drive you to the statue and wait for you to make the ascent within before returning you to Cochabamba.
