About this property
Gullah Cottage on Daufuskie Island
The 1926 Gullah Cottage, located in Daufuskie’s Historic District, has been restored with preserved character and charm. Built for his family by James Bentley, then uninhabited for decades, the cottage was resurrected and rejuvenated by master woodworker, Richard Lahr, beginning in 1986. Subsequent owners have continued adding to its authentic appeal.
With a bath that features a real cast iron clawfoot tub, two cozy bedrooms and even a game room, this is the perfect getaway spot for a couple or small family who want to escape from it all.
Daufuskie is known for its sprawling moss-draped oaks, marshes that are home to rare waterbirds and alligators that live in a symbiotic relationship, and of course an almost endless stretch of wide sandy beachfront facing the Atlantic Ocean. We invite you to explore the island along mostly dirt roads, be tempted by our many unique artisan shops, and discover our lovingly preserved historic sites. For those all-important days on the beach (1.7 miles from the cottage), we’ll equip you with beach chairs, towels, and an umbrella. Bring your own repellant and sunscreen if you need it.
Getting here:
The Daufuskie Island Ferry leaves from Buckingham Landing in Beaufort county and runs on a schedule four times a day. It's best to make reservations in advance especially during peak seasons and tickets can be purchased online.
Getting around:
Gas and electric carts are available for rent on the island and there is a charging post in the cottage driveway for guests. Electric carts can be rented from Daufuskie Carts and they arrange for it to be waiting for you when you arrive from the ferry. In most cases luggage is handled by a delivery service who will drop it off at the cottage for a fee but there may be exceptions for not using the delivery service depending on the number of guests and amount of luggage.
The island is not walkable to most as the only mode of getting around but there are plenty of hikes to be had.
Biking is another way to travel the island though best with ample time and tires suited for sandy roads.
Dining here: While options are limited, there are a few local spots that serve lunch and dinner on the island as well as a coffee shop that serves baked goods and other items.
As for making your own meals, the Cottage kitchen is well equipped. There’s a small grill in the backyard and a fire pit that’s made for S’mores. Do bring your own groceries from the mainland as there is no true grocery store here, just a general store that sells drinks, snacks, some basics and the hours are limited.
Checking in: We will contact you with Cottage access instructions before you begin your stay. Check-in by 4PM, check-out by 11:30AM
