1st Family Vacation

We couldn't have asked for a more Amazing experience. The Shepherds Cottage exceeded our expectations. We fell in love and wanted to stay longer. Kay and Les are wonderful hosts and offered their assistance. We made beautiful memories that will last a lifetime. From the kids playing board games, puzzles, running around the pond, playing football, watching the sheep, playing with the dogs and chickens. And fishing for the first time. We will definitely be back.

Perfect family escape

This was one of the nicest places we have stayed. The kindness of Kay and her husband, were the perfect southern hospitality. Cabin was roomy and beautifully decorated. Beds were extremely comfortable. Everywhere on the property was a fantastic picture opportunity. This is truly a working farm, Kay and her helpers were always out working with the sheep. Grounds are beautifully kept and maintained. It's all the little touches that made this truly perfect. My family and enjoyed our time here so much, I cannot wait to book and stay here again. Anyone who appreciates country settings and good ol' southern charm would love this place.

Best place to stay!

This is our second visit, this time we brought film friends along. Everyone had an awesome time. So relaxing and enjoyable!! To much to list, the quietness, huge porch, fishing, dogs, bike riding, watching the sheep, lots of rest and happy children!!!

Nice and Relaxing

I enjoyed their hospitality. They were extremely helpful and quick to respond when we had questions. They also let us do our own thing without trying to interfere. They allowed the kids to come help them. There was a nice balance of involvement versus leaving us to do our family events together. We're extremely pleased with this place and would highly recommend!! Thank you!!!

Great place, things have been upgraded

We truly loved this place, so much so, two separate people from our group are all ready booking for the fall. It is very remote, which was fine with us, we visited Asheboro antique district, and The Table is an awesome coffee shop with glutenfree and dairy free food. We arrived after dark and didn't see the lake coing in so it was a great surprise to wake up to. We were also treated to watching the dogs train. The catpets in the bedrooms are all brand new, and the guy who complained about the carpets as you entered neglected to mention that they are outside on the porch, which was a great outside room. Over all this was a great place, and hope to be back soon

Wonderful Vacation Trip

We spent 3 nights 7/2-5th and were greeted by the Best Hosts, Les and Kay and have rented with many VRBO Rentals in many Locations and this was one of the BEST Places to take a vacation. The Cottage was like visiting your Grandparents home and decorated by Kay was Exceptional. Will definately Rent this Cottage again soon. Fishing was the best and watching the Sheep was awesome. A Must Stay place anytime of the year, you will not be disappointed. Even though we brought extra items only needed Clothing and Food. 5 STAR AND MORE./Sheila Jo and Tom Baker/ Salisbury, NC

Property pictures doesn’t do justice to reality.

First of all- this is no way a disparagement to property owners Kay and Les. Very nice folks. But you should also see a review from a guy named Steve from his stay earlier in Jun 2021. Pretty accurate review. Be warned- if you have vertigo or balance issue- you will have a tumble. You will be walking up or down hill, depending on which way you’re walking in/out of any room. The place is old and added onto numerous times without the use of a level. The bedroom with a king size bed (presumptive Master BR) is the furthest one a way from a bathroom without going through another BR. Highly decorated with an old/ antique motif- which isn’t bad, but this one borderlines on a Cracker Barrel with beds. I know everyone has their own taste and certainly the owners have the right to decorate as they wish. Added to the old house feel. We were certainly not expecting what we came upon based on the pictures in listing. But we were there and planned on making do seeing it was already paid for. However- the next morning after 1st night stay, we found out there was problem back at home (2 hrs away) that required us to return and deal with. I informed Kay of this and we packed up and left. She of course refused a refund (as per the guidelines) and said we could return within a year to get credit for the lost 2 nights. We will not be returning. I do understand that there is a cancellation no refund caveat but still doesn’t seem like the “right thing to do”. I know I would refund -no matter what the “policy” stated as I believe in that old and apparently dying concept of to treat others as you would want be treated. But to each their own. I suppose when free money is available-that trumps everything. Also you might want to keep a look out for roaches and centipedes. Had to kill 3 that morning as we were packing out. Needless to say everything we took in got a thorough cleaning before we took our possession back in our home. . Good luck.

Two night stay

Kay and Les made us feel right at home. Our granddaughter (11) loved the sheep, dogs and horses. We spent one day at the NC State Zoo which we really enjoyed. Wear good walking shoes and be prepared to get your steps in! The farm is so peaceful —- reminded me of childhood trips to my grandparents farm.

Dingy, Musty, Rotting, STAY AWAY!

Cottage is covered in vines on the front with old rotting rugs on the walkway and porch area. You can see moldy carpet everywhere as it is indoor carpet outside. Arrived at 10pm with a musty, moldy, urine smell to greet us with the owner's husband. It was 80 plus in the house with 90% humidity with everything damp and sticky. No A/C on and disappointed that there were 5 small a/c units in the house, not cut on after we had called with arrival time. After "he" told us to watch out for the fire ants and left we turned on all of the a/c's and an hour later we were all still sweating and almost overcome with the pungent odor of musty mold or mildew coming from everywhere. Our daughter, 8 months pregnant her 3 yr old, who was also here, got nauseous and had headaches all night. My wife coughed all night and could not sleep as we debated sleeping in the car. We knew immediately that for health reasons, as well as the stench that we could not stay. We never unpacked and put our bags in garbage bags to help protect from the smells. A dog was on the front porch in am which helped explain the urine smells coming from the carpets outside. One bedroom floor was so out of level that you felt like you were going to roll out of bed. The windows in the living room are rotting off from the outside in, with the window frame falling off the house and helps explain the musty, moldy smells as rotting wood smells.Outside I saw an open attic space with wet insulation hanging out, where critters were welcome to sleep and pee and crawl above us. All 5 a/c's are very, very old and we could not run the 1 in the living room as the moldy odor coming out of it was unbearable. The furniture that is on the porch and patio is unusable and covered with old throws and dirty pillows. One chair actually has a large black circle on the top part of it from someone's very dirty head. All you can see everywhere on the porch is moldy old rugs that are falling apart, and change colors from the rug color to white and then to black from the mold. Many are literally falling apart , rotting from the edges inward. I told the owner's husband; when he asked how we slept; that we hadn't, and would be leaving due to the moldy, smell for medical reasons. We lost 3 days of our vacation to move to a new home rented on VRBO which was nice. Simular review in Dec 2015 our daughter found as we just looked at a couple reviews and thought it was fine. # 112 of 131 if you want to see and this is 6 years +

This stay was exactly what the doctor ordered.

Our stay at the farm was amazing and took me back to growing up on a farm as a child. Les and Kay were amazing hosts and the cottage had everything we could have possibly needed. Kay communicated with me throughout and answered all of our questions. The serenity of hearing the bells on the sheep and the ability to walk out of the door and fish was great. I really enjoyed my conversations with Les as he is a Army Veteran and I currently serve in the Army. He would come down to the pond and talk with me from time to time which was really nice. Even his dog Whisper kept me company. Les brought us fresh eggs from the farm for breakfast. It was also nice to be close enough to explore the surrounding area and grab some meals when we didn’t feel like cooking. I would give this experience more than five stars if I could. We will definitely be back. If you want to be off the beaten path with the ability reconnect with a simple way of living, this is the place to go.

Amazing views and hosts

Our family went to stay at the cottage for a little getaway and it was perfect! My husband and father in law fished...we grilled out in the evenings and it was only a short 20 min drive to take our 3yo to the Asheboro Zoo! We will definitely stay here again!!

Reunion roost

The Shepard’s Cottage was the perfect rendezvous point for our mini vacation. Minutes from the NC Zoo in Asheboro, Kay and Les have created a beautiful homestead in which travelers can rest and re-energize at the end of the day. Loved having coffee on the porch overlooking the pond. Beautiful place. Beautiful hosts.
