Pocket Guide: Slovakia

Hotels @ Slovakia

Slovakia is fast becoming one of Europe's top tourist destinations, in part thanks to its plethora of fantastic hotel deals Slovakia offering affordability and quality all at once. But people don’t just come here for the deals. Slovakia is a country crammed full of natural beauty, history, culture, good food and great beer.

Vintage buildings preserve a historic charm throughout the capital city of Slovakia, Bratislava. Many of the city paved streets date back hundreds of years and are still in remarkably good shape. Bratislava Castle is one of the best locations in the city and has undergone extensive renovation over the years. Explore exquisite art and artefacts at the Slovak National Museum and the Bratislava City Gallery. The city also offers perfect tranquillity in its green spaces, like Forest Park and Sad Janka Krala.

It’s not just in Bratislava that you’ll find such beautiful culture, architecture and history. In Kosice you will find Jakab's Palace and St. Elizabeth's Cathedral, two of the city’s most prominent landmarks. Visitors can take a stroll along Mlynska Street to find some of the best bargains in the city’s shops and boutiques. The city even has a medieval prison and concrete apartment buildings that nod back to the country’s communist era. Košice is a great place to find budget hotel deals that don’t scrimp on the quality.

Slovakia is home to some of Europe's most charming castles. Bojnice castle started off as a wooden fort all the way back in the 12th Century, it was redeveloped over the years before being rebuilt in the 19th century in the Romantic grandeur you see today. Now it even includes a museum and a zoo. Stara Lubovna castle dates from the 13th century and situated on a hill overlooking the tranquil countryside. Cachtice Castle, which is now in ruins, was once the home of the infamous Elizabeth Bathory, one of the inspirations for vampire lore who was said to bathe in the blood of virgins to remain youthful. Spis Castle is one of the largest castles in Slovakia, but suffered extensive damage during a controversial fire in the 18th century; now it’s been partly renovated and houses a museum. Slovakia hotels offer decent rates on rooms can also be found in close proximity to some of these castles.

But it’s not all man-made beauty. If you want the best of nature, visit Lake Bled. Hire a bike and cycle round the water’s edge; take in the architecture of this quaint town before chilling on the lake beach in the sun. Make sure you take a dip in the absolutely perfect (the water is so clear you can see the fish swimming by your feet) and try your hand at swimming out to the monastery on the island.
