Cachtice Castle, which is now in ruins, was once the home of the infamous Elizabeth Bathory, one of the inspirations for vampire lore who was said to bathe in the blood of virgins to remain youthful. Spis Castle is one of the largest castles in Slovakia, but suffered extensive damage during a controversial fire in the 18th century; now it’s been partly renovated and houses a museum. But it’s not all man-made beauty. If you want the best of nature, visit Lake Bled. Hire a bike and cycle round the water’s edge; take in the architecture of this quaint town before chilling on the lake beach in the sun.
