Fun historic hotel in Douglas, AZ

I loved staying in this 1907 hotel, and my room on the mezzanine level overlooking the lobby gave my stay some class. When I checked in the fellow was very friendly and answered my questions about the history of the hotel and current issues, plus they had a binder with information about the hotel's history. There was live music in the lobby for a few hours in the evening, making this an enjoyable experience while I sat and relaxed. Also fun, was reading a display by the white marble stairs telling the story of Poncho Villa riding his horse up them! In all a fun and relaxing place to visit and stay.

New owners are real nice and accomodating. This is a landmark hotel that has to be experienced. I wish the best as they refurbish this jewel.

Good value for price. Nice staff and great attached restaurant. We will return for sure. Loads of great history to see. This hotel was designed by the same architect who designed the Camino Real in downtown El Paso. Great bar to cool off after a half day trip to the historic Slaughter ranch. Visit the old jail in Pierce, AZ. Which is also close by. Remember to carry ID as this area is heavily patrolled by Border Patrol.

Antastic!

Unfortunately I can't rate this with higher marks, but I would like to. The beds were clean & comfortable, the fridge & microwave were good amenities, the bathroom was well appointed, the AC worked well, & all of the staff were friendly & helpful. There supposedly was wifi but never worked. The old phone booths should have mounted iPads and printers. The experience of staying in a historic hotel was worth it. Plus there is a small museum off the lobby that honors the building's past. Because the hotel is old- some modification of standards is to be expected. I hope to stay there again but ideally when more has been done to bring back the splendor of yesteryear. However, the place was inundated by ants! They weren't just in the room but found in the lobby, in the hallways, & even seen in heeps right outside. To be fair, I saw a larger than normal ant population blocks away, so maybe Douglas is experiencing ants how Bodega Bay experienced Birds. Perhaps recent rain has caused the problem; but it felt like The Gadsen was the epicenter. I'm not sure if the problem can be 100% controlled, but I believe more could be done. They likely know guests are going to see the ants, but the dillema is, does the hotel look at the eleph(ant) in the room, & say they're being spayed? Or, do you hope people look the other way? It's hard to do that when you see your discarded bath towel with five large red ants on it! I don't have the antser but they kept me from rating higher.

Come for a meal

Wished to have a margarita from the bar but closed Memorial Weekend and limited hours for breakfast and lunch in the hotel restaurant. Staff fairly attentive with poor customer service. Hotel room large with carpet pulling up and room noisy on main street.

Stayed here for the history of the hotel. Great feeling of what the hotel would have been like in the early 1900's

Diamond in the rough... very rough!

The hotel should shut down. Other than the priceless beauty of the lobby, there is no reason to stay at this hotel. It's a shame that such a once royal place should have to die a slow agonizing death.

Good for historic perspective!

Loved the history of the hotel. Unfortunately our rooms didn't block out the street lights and noise from G Avenue. If they can improve on that it would be helpful. Also, walls are thin so could hear our noisy neighbors next door.

At least we have a good story to tell re: ghosts!

We stayed at the Gadsden Hotel knowing very little about it other than a bit or research that we did online prior to booking the room. We were given a room on the 3rd floor. It felt very isolated and dilapidated from the minute we got out of the elevator, but we thought it was interesting to be staying in such a historic hotel so we decided to tough it out. As we walked past some other rooms on the floor we noticed several rooms dead bolted, and one door with a load of graffiti scratched into it. Our room itself was fairly dismal. The furniture was badly outdated. The carpet was filthy, there was old soap left in the shower, so clearly the room had not been cleaned well. Also, the shower leaked horribley and there was no means to regulate temperatures in the room. We had some creepy experiences in the night, that lead us to research online whether the hotel was believed to be haunted, it is! I'm glad I learned this after leaving the hotel. Room 333 is believed to be one one of the most haunted, which was right across the hall from our room! Why would the front desk, in a nearly empty hotel, put us right next to the haunted room?!?! We also heard news reports online from only a month ago saying they were not placing guests on the 3rd and 4th floors! So why on earth did they stick us up there? It felt a bit malicious actually. We are not picky travelers, and are fairly sceptical but this was not a nice experience and freaked us out!

The room was lousy on the third floor, hallway awful, sink handle came off, couldn't adjust shower temperature, elevator was very old and required an attendant to operate, stairs were difficult to climb. Very poor hotel experience.

Historical VS Old and Broken down?

The website pictures are deceiving! It shows you a price and all you see for the rooms are the renovated rooms, not the as they say Historical rooms. They were awful! Just old and dirty, not Historical! They gave us the room that it showed on the website after I showed them what was offered. The room was nice, nice comfortable bed, nice Jacuzzi Tub! But I had to fight for it! The Bar was great! Great Bartender!

Grand Damme Hotel of the old West

Historically it is great! Room was clean and bed was very comfortable. The hotel does needs electrical upgrades, occasionally the fuses knockout and need to reset. On our visit there were about 4 partial outages, which makes for minor inconveniences. Portable heaters are in each room, because of no central heating. Service/desk clerk was fabulous. Lobby is a must to see. Loud guests can echo thru the hotel. Make sure you reserve a renovated room and not a historical room. Top floors are in need of renovations. Breakfast was not included in our room rate, but appears they have a very nice restaurant. Would I stay there again - - yes.

When I arrived I was told I had been upgraded to a renovated room. THANK THE GODS!!! Can't even imagine what the unrenovated rooms were like. The room had a bed a small TV & refrigerator on top of a dresser. A chair about 48" away from the TV screen. No place to put a laptop except on your lap. A tiny bathroom. Barely enough room to move around the bed. I'd be surprised if the room were 120 square feet. The bathroom was miniscule. Very historic though. Lobby was great. Restaurant not so much. The 1/3 lb burger was almost as big as a McD 1/4 pounder and the fries were undercooked. Very limited menu.

Fun paranormal experience

Our room was at a cheap rate because we stayed in a non-renovated room on the third floor. The room was extremely cold but we were given a space heater that did the job. Tv had limited channels and it was a very old tv. The morning we were checking out our lights turned off and on by themselves. Kinda scary but a funny memory. The Saddle and Spur bar was great. Leslie the bartender was awesome. The bar staff and hotel staff were great. If I go back I would stay in a renovated room next time. However, the experience was fun. Loved riding in the old elevator, I think that was my favorite part. The biker club that was in town had some major paranormal activity and invited us to invoke some spirit's. We passed, however they were a fun group to drink with.

Bad Experience

Was not aware that the room booked on Expedia was not a renovated room until I checked in and the room was from the 1960's. I put the this blame on Expedia.

Beautiful old hotel, loved the lobby area and reception. Our room was comfortable and the bedding was great. We slept very well. Everything was very clean and tidy. Older bathroom fixtures and limited closet space, but not really a negative for us.
