Explore a charming Italian town with an impressive Romanesque Gothic cathedral, elegant palaces, underground Roman pools and delicious local food.

Fermo is a seaside town and commune of Le Marche region, in the Province of Fermo, Italy. Enjoy its coastal area with sandy and pebbled beaches, protected from the wind by lovely green hills. Visit the city centre to find majestic palazzi (palaces) housing valuable paintings, a 13th-century cathedral and a magnificent archaeological complex with Roman cisterns.

The ancient name of the city was Firmum Picenum. The area was once a Latin colony or colonia, with Roman headquarters established in a conquered territory to control it. Fermo was originally part of the Ascoli-Fermo province but in 2004 the province of Fermo was finally established, with the city of Fermo becoming its capital in 2009.

Enjoy this beautiful Italian city full of magnificent old buildings, including the Cattedrale Metropolitana di Santa Maria Assunta in Cielo (Fermo Cathedral). Take photos of its Gothic façade made of pietra d'Istria (Istrian stone), its large rose window and its heavy bronze doors. Wander inside to see the neoclassical interior, with frescoes dating back to the 14th century and a sarcophagus from the 4th century.

Visit the town centre to see the famous Piazza del Popolo, a stunning square in Renaissance style. Here you can find the 16th-century Palazzo dei Priori, with the statue of Pope Sixtus V, former Bishop of Fermo. Inside the palace is an art gallery housing Rubens’ masterpiece called Nativity and other valuable paintings. Continue strolling through the area to see the famous theatre Teatro dell'Aquila and the Palazzo degli Studi, which houses the magnificent town library.

While you are in the city centre, make sure you stop at the Piscine Romane, a massive underground archaeological site with exceptional engineering work. Leave the city centre behind and enjoy a day at Fermo’s seaside, an area with quiet beaches and plenty of restaurants, lively bars and nightclubs.

Discover Fermo, a picturesque city of Italy with many beautiful sites to see and interesting things to do.
