Spacious cabin in gated community.
Time to unwind and relax? Spend some time at ROAMING ELK LODGE!! Our secluded log cabin is a true escape from the hustle and bustle of life.
The cabin is located at an altitude of 9,500 feet in the gated community of Forbes Park nestled in the Sangre Cristo Mountains, in historic San Luis Valley/ South Colorado. Forbes Park is characterized by alpine meadows, aspen, spruces, pines, some ponds and creeks. Miles and miles of unpaved roads offer plenty of opportunity for hiking.
The park is teeming with wildlife. The cabin is a short walk from the Big Lake. At the end of the day, take a stroll to the lake where elk and deer gather to drink. You may even encounter a black bear or a mountain lion. Hunting is not allowed in Forbes Park; however, it is permitted in neighboring San Isabel National Forest (permit needed). Far away from city lights, you will have an amazing view of countless stars. Just bundle up under a blanket and enjoy the view from the deck.
The cabin (1600 sq. ft.) has recently been remodeled and it is yours to enjoy. The cabin has a fully equipped kitchen, with all the needed appliances. Three spacious bedrooms (two queen beds and two twin beds). Two and a half bathrooms, of which one with a large whirlpool tub. If you need to do any laundry, you have full access to the washer and dryer.
Things to do nearby: * Hike Mount Blanca. At 14,345 ft. Mount Blanca is the dominant landmark of the San Luis Valley. * Great Sand Dunes National Park. Hike the tall dunes, try sandboarding and play in Medano Creek (seasonal). * Climb aboard……. Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad. The train will take you through steep mountain canyons and high deserts along the Colorado and New Mexico border. * Historic Fort Garland Museum takes you back in time to the era of Kit Carson. * Take a historic walking tour in downtown Alamosa and enjoy a local beer at the brewery. * Soak in one of the Hot Springs. * Drive Scenic Highway of Legends and stop in La Veta, a small laid-back town near the Spanish Peaks. Visit Fort Francisco Museum and the antique shops and galleries in downtown La Veta. * Lathrop State Park. Take a swim at the lake or try your luck fishing and golfing. San Luis Valley is a good place for birders who visit to wildlife refuges in Alamosa and Monte Vista which are a major stop-over for migratory birds, especially in spring and fall.
** Note: The Spring Fire of 2018 burned through Forbes Park. Three years later young aspen are sprouting everywhere, wildflowers are blooming and the mountain slopes are turning green again!
We invite you to spend some time at ROAMING ELK LODGE. Make it your home away from home and enjoy it as much as we do.

I come to fort Garland a few times a year. Im so glad I found this gem! The location is great a it is so clean and meticulous I wouldn’t stay anywhere else. Also the owners are a pleasure to work with. Can’t wait to go back.
Our group loved the house! It is so cozy! It is a beautiful country. The place was clean and tidy. I recommend giving this sweet spot a visit. Plus the hosts where so easy to work with before and during our stay.
Thank you so much for a great experience!
We had a Great time at at this cozy cabin. It had everything we needed to be comfortable. We heard Elk calling almost every night! We even had a family of Deer visit in the front yard! It was a very peaceful stay. I liked that there was a basement area where I could easily store my hitch carrier and couple of electric scooters. I loved the wrap around balcony! Although the view of the side balcony was blocked by a few trees, it was still very nice. Our host Peter sent us everything we needed to access the cabin. We had no issues at all. He made himself available if we needed anything. I only wish I had more time to stay longer. It was a was a very much needed and relaxing getaway for me and my family. I highly recommend this place. Thanks for some Great Memories!
Well designed and attractively built lodge. Ideal for family and friends get-together.

This was our third stay at this property and we have always had a wonderful experience. The cabin home is very clean and offers so many amenities. It is always a pleasure to interact with the owners and we would highly recommend Roaming Elk Lodge.
We loved our stay here. The cabin was great, we saw several deer and a couple of elk. The poor mountain is still recovering from a fire but we still had great views. It was cool and rainy a couple of days. We had a wonderful relaxing vacation.
We had a fabulous time staying at this cabin. We saw a herd of elk, plenty of deer and beautiful birds! The furnishings and cleanliness were fantastic! Having coffee and spices on site was so appreciated. We would highly recommend this place to others and hope to visit again someday! Christie
The property was beautiful. The home was immaculate. Every detail was thoughtfully considered. Had a question about the heating and the owner was quick to respond and very helpful. I would definitely recommend and hope to stay there again.
We enjoyed our stay here, the cabin was very clean and updated. The pictures of the bathtub don’t do it justice, it’s incredible! And seeing/hearing elk & mule deer right from the cabin itself was a treat. Would stay again for sure.
This was our second stay at this beautiful cabin home. We love everything about it!! Would highly recommend it! The location is beautiful, the cabin is very comfortable and the hosts are great to work with.
This is my first vacation ever out of state and I gotta say it was hands down my favorite vacation I’ve ever had. The cabin is beautiful, but the scenery in the mountain range is what got me. WOW. Definitely would love to come back in the winter.
Stayed here for 6 nights with my husband and my adult sister who has some mental disabilities. We were so impressed of how stocked this cabin was, from coffee, to spices, all the kitchen appliances and utensils you can think of. Extra linens, bath towels and even extra blankets. Every room clean, dust free, bug free just a very well kept home and an enjoyable stay. Very recommended and will come back again!
We had a wonderful stay! The cabin is easy to access, and we had so much room to spread out. The cabin is beautiful and had everything we needed to enjoy our week.
We visited Walsenburg, La Veta, Cuchara, Trinidad and Pueblo. We visited Bishop's Castle, drove on three scenic byways and so enjoyed this area of Colorado. We drove over to Antonito to ride the Cumbres & Toltec train, which was wonderful!
Our only disappointment was not seeing any elk during our visit. I highly recommend Roaming Elk Lodge!
The pictures didn’t do this home justice. Up to date clean and extremely comfortable. My Wife and I decided to have a vacation with our adult children and show them around the area where I grew up and had an amazing time. We had several day trips to Royal Gorge, Red River, Sand Dunes and still everyone’s highlight of the trip was this wonderful cabin. We immediately felt at home and hated leaving. If we plan a trip back to the valley this will be our first choice.
Loved this property and did not want to leave. The owners definitely think of their guests with how well stocked the cabin is with essentials and personal commodities in case you forgot yours. Was disappointed that we didn’t see wild life but i think we were in the wrong season for the Elk and they were higher up in the mountains.
Please note the cabin is secluded and it takes about 30 min to get to a paved road. I would not recommend driving a car back to the cabin. The road isn’t paved and it’s a very rough ride. Advise to use SUV or truck.
Me and three friends rented this cabin so that we could access and hike a few 14ers in the area. This cabin was perfect and made for a great stay. The renters were very responsive and easy to interact with and they really though through how to make a great experience in their property !

Good stay
Was a good little get away with the family to relax. Only downsides were that we wished there was a cozier couch to lay around in at the cabin and second the queen beds were hard as rocks my wife and I had a terrible time sleeping and woke up sore every morning. Other than that it was a very pleasant trip
