Not Where I Thought

I learned a painful lesson about booking rooms in Portugal through Hotels.com. Cities and regions can have the same name. I thought I was booking in the city of Guimares, only to find out that I was 17 km away, high up on a mountain. The location made it difficult to explore the city, but it turns out to be very nice in its own right. It is atop a mountain with good views, in nice woods, and above the city smoke. The hotel is a little old but the staff were nice. The restaurant was good for dinner and breakfast was quite satisfactory.

Chambre trop froide et on entend toutes les tuyauteries des chambres voisines mais hôtel situé dans un lieu remarquable. Le personnel est agréable et le petit déjeuner inclus ds la prestation est non seulement bon mais surtout situé dans une belle salle donnant elle-même sur la superbe salle de restaurant avec vue sublime

Truly remarkable surroundings

The hotel was fine with a delightful dinner and breakfasts; but what will make this stay linger in my thoughts is the astounding geology of the park/shrine where it is situated. It is a hilltop with great views down on Guimaraes and strewn with acres of massive mossy boulders interlaced with narrow tracks and steep stairs that invite exploring in all weather. It is hard to find and somewhat distant from the conventional attractions, but worth the climb and (in winter at least) a considerable bargain.

Panorama magnifique, à 600m d'altitude dominant Guimaraês. Calme, parfait pour rayonner dans le Nord du Portugal ou pour se reposer. Très bonne cuisine en dîner (pas plus cher qu'en ville). Chambre, un peu petite, mais très correcte à un prix "expedia" compétitif.
