The world-class Phoenix Heard Museum was founded by Dwight and Maie Heard in 1929 in order to house their personal collection of American Indian artwork. Spread out over two locations, one in North Scottsdale and the main one in Central Phoenix, this pioneering museum is dedicated to the preservation and promotion of Native American art, culture and history and is a must for any culture vulture on holidays in Phoenix.Set in the lush surroundings of a beautiful Spanish Colonial building, the extensive collection of over 40,000 artefacts is spread across twelve galleries and includes a mix of Native American paintings, sculptures and photography. With an impressive selection of artwork from a range of pre-Colombian to contemporary Native American artists, visitors will be enthralled, intrigued and inspired in equal measure.Arguably, the highlight of the museum is the wonderful exhibit Home: Native People in the Southwest.
