The first traces of settlement, such as the stone church, can be traced back to the Paleolithic period, making the area around Scharzfeld the location of the oldest settlements of people in the entire southwestern Harz foothills.
Castle Scharzfels from the 12th Century testifies that the place was a preferred settlement location.
The federal roads B 27 and B 243 open up many western and southern Harz towns. Bad Lauterberg is 10 minutes away and also z. B. Osterode, Göttingen, Duderstadt, Clausthal-Zellerfeld, Braunlage, St. Andreasberg, Torfhaus can be reached quickly. But Thuringia and Saxony-Anhalt are also right next door ...
Since the area reform in 1972, Scharzfeld has been part of the municipality of Herzberg am Harz.
With the stone church, the castle ruins of Scharzfels and in particular the unicorn cave, the town offers numerous interesting destinations and is also the starting point for hikes in the Upper Harz such as: B. to the Großer Knollen, the Harzer Baudensteig, the Harzer Hexenstieg etc.
