Head to this perennially popular wintersports and outdoor activity hub to get active as you ski, fish, hike or simply unwind amid the gorgeous scenery.

Hovden is the largest skiing area in the south of Norway. Come here for various types of wintersports including cross-country skiing, dog-sledding, skating and sleigh rides. In the summer, hike through mountain meadows sprinkled with wildflowers, go fishing in a beautiful fjord, tee off at the golf course or even head out on a moose safari.

The Hovden Alpine Center is at the center of most skiing vacations spent in Hovden. Arrange your activities here, rent skis and other equipment and get advice on the different slopes and cross-country skiing trails best suited to different levels of experience.

Discover the many different ways to explore the mountains. Ride to the summit of Nos on the chairlift to enjoy some beautiful views along the way. Hike up the dramatic peak called Hovdenuten or stay on lower ground as you follow the route of the pretty Børtemannsbekken stream.

Other options for outdoor fun include river snorkeling, off-road biking, moose safaris, kayaking and river jumping. Head to the picturesque Hegni recreation area, next to the sparkling waters of Hartevatn lake, for a day spent fishing, swimming, hiking or biking at your own pace.

In any season, Hovden Badeland & Spa makes for a great day out for people of all ages. This indoor waterpark has slides and floats to keep younger visitors entertained, as well as relaxing spa facilities for adults. Come here to take a break from the hillsides.

Another attraction worth visiting in the town itself is the Bykle Old Church. This postcard-perfect white church was last refurbished in 1804, but its altar dates back as far as the early 17th century. Bring a camera when you visit, as the view of the pretty church against the rich green landscape is almost too idyllic to be believed.

Choose from a few different options for getting to Hovden. Drive from Oslo to get here in around 4.5 hours. Alternatively, take the 6-hour direct bus ride that starts at Oslo airport. The bus from central Bergen takes a similar amount of time.
