Aspen Lodge
8/10 Good
"Our room was clean but the bed was so-so for comfort. Carpet in the stairway was dirty and torn. We enjoyed the huge whirlpool as well as the whirlpool bathtub in our room."
The Superior Bunkhouse, a Cozy 16 X 24 Cabin near Grand Marais MN and Hovland MN
8/10 Good
"We had four adults in our party. The bunkhouse felt very roomy, bright and cozy. We all slept comfortably. With the roll out mattress (all mattresses fitted with fresh, clean sheets) under the bunk bed and the cushions around the table, sleeping arrangement design was well thought out. The host communicated via Vrbo email and direct messaging, which made it very easy. Excellent communication along with all the detailed information a traveller could want/need - even a video link on how to operate the indoor portable toilet. The kitchen had a large, open counter space for prepping meals. Though there is not a stove, there were plenty of cooking options: a small propane grill outside, a hot plate, microwave, and convection oven/toaster. We appreciated the filtered water pump in the kitchen sink and the multiple jugs of water available. Not having to haul in water is a huge deal.It was more of a forrest experience than a lake experience. Though the bunkhouse is close to Lake Superior, it was hard to see the lake through the trees. There is a large cabin next door but we still felt we had a very secluded, peaceful experience. There is a small private deck in the back of the bunkhouse. I feel the bunkhouse experience could be enhanced with a larger front deck. I was told that it was in the works/plans.As someone who has done a fair amount of cabin rentals and camping on the North Shore, this is a GREAT value/bargain for all the conveniences and location! Recommend!"
Feather Nest Inn
10/10 Excellent
"Easy to access. Walking distance to shops and shoreline. Nicely decorated. Comfortable and quiet area."
Harbor Inn Self Check-in Hotel
10/10 Excellent
"Our room was very nice and appeared to be recently updated. This is a “self service” kind of place so there is no maid service during your stay. There is a number you can call if you need anything. It is a great location right across from the harbor so you can walk to everything in downtown Grand Marias. I would request a second floor room next time for better views of the harbor."
Lakefront retreat, river/wood fireplace/hot tub
10/10 Excellent
"House was perfect for our family of 5. Hosts put effort into making sure the place is well stocked, everything down to small touches like some snacks for our kids, some drinks in the fridge, drinking water available (BYO would be completely reasonable), and plenty of dry chopped wood available. It's been a long time since I had a stay that felt this welcoming and thoughtful!"
Private Shoreline on Lake Superior
10/10 Excellent
"What a fabulous hidden treasure!!! Perfect, cozy little spot just footsteps from Lake Superior. Loved all the thought that went into the design of the property. It’s a small room (I’m guessing 12 x8) but they’ve made such good use of the space, inside and out. Loved having the big picture windows that looked right out onto the water. Perfect for sunrise. The outhouse was clean, tidy, and had the best view I have ever had the pleasure of taking while visiting an outhouse. Also we were lucky enough to get a bit of rain, allowing us both to enjoy a nice hot outdoor shower before we left. Absolutely fantastic. We will definitely be back!"

Mökki Hovland Hut - A Unique Glass Wall Timber Frame Nestled in a Maple Forest
10/10 Excellent
"Greetings! My husband of 22 years and I are celebrating our anniversary in the sweetest little Finnish mökki tucked away in Minnesota’s Arrowhead region. We’re completely surrounded by maple trees. There’s no electricity, no running water, and our bathroom is an outhouse hidden in the woods. We had one exciting moment getting here—the road ended with a pretty rough hill, and if the Subaru Outback hadn’t made it, we would have been carrying all of our food and luggage for about fifteen minutes. Thankfully, the Subaru proved itself once again! It’s so peaceful here. We’ve unplugged from the world for a few days. No news, no endless scrolling—just simple meals, reading, writing, and listening to the wind in the trees. The Finns have a wonderful idea about a mökki. It’s a place to slow down and enjoy ordinary moments. I’ve discovered those ordinary moments are pretty extraordinary. The cabin is crafted in a dovetail timber log building technique. The 16’ by 16’ is meticulously embraced by glasswalls on east and south side showcase the knee braces, both from the inside and outside. At first it feels like giving things up, but it quickly becomes something else entirely. Mornings without alarms, tea by lantern light, long walks instead of scrolling. The noise of the city fades, and what’s left is simple and steady. It turns out you don’t need much to feel grounded. Just time, stillness and each other."
