Indianapolis Cultural Trail

Travel Guide

A tree-lined pathway leading to a building with a sign for the Max Theater.
A street with a brick building, a mural, and a dog on the sidewalk.
A city street lined with trees and buildings, including a tall skyscraper in the background.
A street corner with a red brick building, cars parked along the street, and a pedestrian crossing.
A cityscape with a central water feature reflecting buildings and a sculpture.

Experience the attractions of the city on foot or by bike with this long circuit that runs through the Cultural Districts of Indianapolis.

The Indianapolis Cultural Trail is a multi-use conduit with bike lanes and walking paths that pass through the city center. Public works of art have been commissioned along the trail, which also passes highlights of the downtown district and its surrounding area. Get a sense of the local culture and aesthetic on this long and fascinating walk through the city.

As you amble along, notice the tinted pavers in diamond shapes that make the trail easy to identify. Borrow bikes from one of the share stations and follow the path with your family.

Among the most iconic works of art adorning the sides of the trail is the Ann Dancing piece by Julian Opie, a display of lights making up a dancing figure in a dress. A block away, spot the mural My Affair with Kurt Vonnegut.

See historical aspects of the culture of Indianapolis in the Mile Square area of the Wholesale District. Look for the Indiana Statehouse, Soldiers & Sailors Monument and Eiteljorg Museum.

Wander through the Fountain Square area and consider attending a live music event at the Hoosier Dome. In the Indiana Avenue area, enjoy the scenic Indianapolis Canal Walk and admire parts of Indiana University.

Ride bikes along the canal or go for a gondola ride. Stop for pizza or sushi in one of the many restaurants along the main avenues. Explore Market East, Massachusetts Avenue and the White River State Park districts as well.

Snow is removed from the trail in winter, making it accessible year-round for free. Access the trail anywhere as there is no specific start or end point.

The Indianapolis Cultural Trail runs right through the center of the city, looping around the downtown area. It heads northeast, before joining the Monon Trail, as well as southeast to the Fountain Square Historic District. The latter route culminates in the Pleasant Run Trail.

While in the city, consider stopping at other highlights such as the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum, the Indiana State Museum and the Indiana Repertory Theatre.
