See the looming shapes of the “Bubbles” mountains reflected in the exceptionally clear and deep water of Bar Harbor’s glacial pond.

Find Jordan Pond on the southern fringes of Acadia National Park. On Maine’s breathtaking Mount Desert Island, scenic vistas are common, but Jordan Pond still stands out. Its clear water, dramatic mountain surroundings and hiking opportunities offer something for everyone.

Hewn from a glacier, Jordan Pond is very deep for its size. Because it is unspoiled by pollution, it is also remarkably clear. Peer down into the pond’s depths and you may see as far down as 60 feet (18 meters), which is the highest visibility recorded in the state of Maine.

Admire views from every corner of Jordan Pond. Two looming mountains, nicknamed the “Bubbles,” sit on its northern shores. On a calm day, the mirror like reflection of the mountains in the pond’s surface is a sight to behold.

Note that swimming is not allowed in Jordan Pond. However, non-motor boats are welcome. Explore its coves and open waters by kayak or canoe. Find the boat launch at the Jordan Pond North parking lot.

Explore Mount Desert Island’s wilderness along the Carriage Roads. This stunning network of trails, created by John D. Rockefeller, Jr., snake primarily through Acadia National Park. Hike, bike or even snowshoe through lush forests, craggy coastlines and more. The roads run adjacent to Jordan Pond.

Take a break at Jordan Pond House, Acadia National Park’s only full service restaurant. Have lunch, dinner or afternoon tea. In warm weather, follow the 19th-century tradition of having afternoon tea and popovers on the lawn while enjoying the view of Jordan Pond and the mountains in the distance. Reservations are recommended.

Stop by the on-site gift shop, which offers everything from park souvenirs to more practical items such as boots and clothing. Go to the observation deck on the second floor to enjoy stunning vistas across the pond.

Access Jordan Pond by car via the Park Loop Road. Alternatively, hop on the complimentary Island Explorer Shuttle Bus, which has a drop-off and pick-up point by the pond.
