When you’re all partied out, head for this tranquil beach resort to relax, unwind and experience another side of Phuket.
Kamala Beach is one of the hidden gems of Phuket Island. Golden sands, gentle waves, unspoilt landscape and a relaxed attitude to life provide a refreshing contrast to the high-energy resorts just along the coast. This family-friendly fishing village is the perfect antidote to party fatigue. The sheltered bay is a perfect spot for swimming all year round, with especially calm conditions from November to April. Even small children can paddle safely at the water’s edge, undisturbed by the surfers and kayakers of Kamala’s busier neighbours, while their parents soak up the sun or go snorkelling. The clear offshore waters at the north end of the beach provide a perfect close-up of life under the waves, while the secluded south end has loungers to rent and soft sand on which to dream away the hours. This relatively undeveloped beach has limited public facilities, but there are several beachfront hotels and restaurants which are usually willing to let you use their bathrooms, in addition to serving up delicious food at lunchtime. If you can’t tear yourself away from the beach to eat, there are plenty of stalls selling takeaway Thai favourites, including tender satay, spicy curries and fresh salads. After you’ve thoroughly relaxed on the beach, head into the pretty town centre to explore its shops and markets. The twice-weekly market on Kamala Main Road is packed with atmosphere, bustling with bargain-hunting locals and fragrant with the aromas of traditional street food. The Friday night village market brings together a variety of stalls selling clothes, DVDs, handicrafts and fresh produce. If you miss the markets, there are plenty of well-stocked shops to browse for souvenirs or stock up on tasty local fare.As night falls, the tranquil pace of life shifts up a gear as the crowds start arriving for Phuket FantaSea. This Vegas-style extravaganza features a cast of hundreds, from trapeze artists and traditional dancers to performing elephants and spectacular acrobatics. Soak up the carnival atmosphere as you wander among the colourful stalls and dine beneath the stars.Kamala Beach is 8 kilometres north of Patong Beach on the west coast of Phuket Island, around half an hour’s drive from the international airport.
