The Red Ohana is a cute little cottage just outside of Waimea. It is a great location from which to explore the Hilo side of Hawaii, and Waimea is a lovely little town to explore. (don’t miss the Wednesday and Saturday Kamuela Farmers Market) Laura was an excellent host, great communication and very welcoming - she kept us informed of everything we needed to know. On our last day, due to bad weather, we asked at the last minute if we could extend our stay by a day to accommodate our late flight off the island, and Laura was flexible enough to accommodate our request and allow us the extra day, which we very much appreciated. Mahalo, Laura - we hope to be back to visit again sometime.
Great location just minutes from Waimea and 10 minute drive to coast and beaches. Beautiful green hills of Kohala mountain and great Waimea restaurants, farmers markets. Laura is great host, very responsive and easy to work with. Great comfy bed and pillows, with Hawaiian touches throughout the interior.
We had a quiet, relaxing stay at the 2 BR Red Ohana. I particularly appreciated Laura reaching out to us and offering both an early check-in and late check-out since there were no guests departing or arriving immediately before/after our stay. That's hospitality at its finest.
Beautiful, clean property and a quiet location. We loved that everything we could have needed was at the house! A short drive to the coast, about 15-20 minutes away. It was convenient to be close to shops as well! The host is wonderful at answering any questions and giving local recommendations. We will definitely be back!
The Red Ohana represents true aloha. Laura was so kind and attentive. The home was clean and a comfortable space to return to after exploring Waimea, Honokaa, Hawi, and Spencer Beach (just 15 minutes away!). We will definitely be back. Mahalo!
We spent 4 lovely nights in the 2 bedroom cottage. Cute and well-appointed. Comfy beds and very functional kitchen. We ate in all but one night. Savored a local breakfast as well as dinner at Merriman’s, yoga and the farmers market. Highly recommend for 2 or 3 travelers.
We enjoyed a week long stay in this home. The location is perfect, close to beach and other scenic areas on the island. The house includes a private deck with a grill and comfortable seating. We enjoyed watching the geckos. Inside, the house has nice furnishings and a well stocked kitchen for cooking. The grounds include fruit trees. The boogie boards, beach towels, and beach chairs came in handy. The host was responsive to questions.
At the top of my five star ratings was Laura, the property manager. She knows this island very well and readily shared her thoughts. More than a property manager, she was the best concierge for our group of Girl Scouts, moms and younger siblings.
We've stayed in a lot of vrbo's and the Red Ohana is one of the best! Laura made everything so easy for us from check in through our unplanned extended stay. Our flight was canceled twice due to the grounding of some Alaska Airline planes. The Red Ohana is beautiful! The pictures don't do this place justice! The peaceful setting of Waimea is perfect if you need a quiet break. I would highly recommend this place and will be back for another stay. Thank you!
An exceptional place to stay for a Hawaii vacation. The Red Ohana.I had the pleasure of a week’s stay here, a place that gives tremendous thought to making a great vacation experience. When I’ve rented other vacation houses, I’ve often felt that I was trespassing in someone else’s living room. Not so at the Red Ohana. The whole vibe is welcoming. The decor is charming. The layout is comfortable. Everything is well-thought-out and well-supplied. The kitchen, the bathroom, the bedrooms, the laundry, the housekeeping, the porch chairs, the beach supplies — all needs anticipated and ready to go. The landscaping is private, soothing and beautiful. This was the ideal place for a family reunion. My family of four had the two-bedroom house; the extended family had the larger house about twelve steps away. It was easy to share meals, make group plans, and relax. When we needed a break from togetherness, we had privacy at hand in separate houses.Like I said, exceptional.
This lovely little house is very nicely furnished and well-equipped for a nice vacation stay. We're very comfortable there because it's so clean, up to date and everything works. We like the location in Waimea, away from all the tourists and close to some outstanding restaurants in a nice little town.
We don't go on vacation to sit around and watch TV, but after a day of scuba diving, that's how we sometimes relax. When we told our excellent host Laura that the TV didn't work well, she showed up soon with a big new smart TV that allowed us to access all the streaming services we have at home. That's some really top notch service.
This was our second stay at Red Ohana and we'll definitely be back next time we go to the Big Island.
What a wonderful place to stay! So beautifully decorated and comfortable. We slept soundly, and enjoyed the kitchen, the shower, the TV. The covered lanai was absolutely magical in a light rain storm one day, and we enjoyed our morning coffee there on the comfy lounge chairs every day. The first thing I noticed in the kitchen was all the different options for coffee brewing - french press, keurig pod brewer, grinder, and drip machines - this is when I said 'this lady gets me'! So thoughtful. The garden was lush and beautiful, and the location was close to great restaurants, grocery store, and conveniences. Absolutely wonderful and highly recommend!! Thank you Laura!!
Well cared for and charming cottage with vintage Hawaii vibe.
Cottage was equipped with everything you would need and more. It was immaculately clean and thoughtfully decorated. The property is quiet and peaceful. I very much enjoyed the large covered deck. The three bedroom Ohana is on the same property, but the layout and landscaping makes it private and quiet. Yes, as one reviewer mentioned, you’ll find that Waimea is cooler at night…. In Hawaii, If you are staying at higher altitude, then you’ll have cooler nights for sleeping. The cottage is equipped with nice down comforters so you’ll have a cozy nights sleep. Personally I love Waimea. It’s a beautiful area that is so completely different than the coast. It’s a great place to stay if you want some variety from the beach, yet It’s only about 15 minutes drive to Hapuna Beach. Wherever you stay on the big island, you’ll be driving. Waimea is a nice jumping off spot to drive to Hawi or along the coast down to the Hilo side. Laura is the epitome of hospitality and customer service! She’s a terrific host and an excellent and prompt communicator. I would definitely stay here again.
What a wonderful property! We enjoyed staying at Red Ohana very much. Our family of 4 fit comfortably in the two bedroom guest house. The parents stayed in the larger bedroom with the king bed (very comfy) and the kiddos (5 and 18m) slept in the smaller room. The smaller room is easy to make dark and cozy for the kiddos. Laura gave us a pack n play for our little one to sleep in. It was perfect. We spent warm evenings on the back porch lounging on the comfy chairs and playing games on the big table. Mornings were spent looking for geckos and checking to see if any avocados fell from the tree! There is a quiet road behind the house for short walks and horses occasionally across the street at the prep school. The backyard is even a great place for a little star gazing if you don’t want to take an after sunset adventure with Littles but still want to experience the beautiful skies. The house was very clean, the towels, linens and dishes were all great quality. We appreciated the variety of coffee making devices and were charmed by the attention to detail the owner had shown to decor (the Tupperware lids even match the red theme!)The location can’t be beat, a great park is just minutes away and you are within a 15-20 min drive to amazing beaches. We loved Spencer Beach and the beach at the Mauna Kea resort (though it’s a bit of a walk).
We had another wonderful stay at the Red Ohana. The town of Waimea never disappoints. The people are amazing, the food was so good and we loved the views. Laura is one of the most attentive hosts and is very easy to contact. Don’t hesitate to book this home away from home.
Perfect communication, wellappointed with whatever is needed. It would be tough for my parents with a very tight shower and no climate control, but was no issue for our younger family. We had a great stay.
Laura was very easy to deal with and very accomodating. The property is absolutely beautiful and made our little vacation that much more special. I hope to make it out again.
