Things to See and Do in Killaloe & BallinaFrom our holiday homes in Killaloe you can easily access the beautiful cathedral town of Killaloe on foot. Guest can access the town via a path, woodland walk and beautiful boardwalk along Lough Derg. You and your guests will enjoy the pleasant 10-minute walk to the many amenities these two lakeside towns have to offer.

The picturesque twin towns of Killaloe and Ballina are linked by a 13-arch bridge, which links not only the two towns, but also the counties of Clare and Tipperary. The towns span the River Shannon at the southern point of Lough Derg.

Killaloe, on the Clare side of the river, is made up of charming narrow streets, flanked by old shops along the steep hill looking down over the 13th century cathedral. The town was home to Brian Boru, the High King who united Ireland against the Vikings, so this picture-perfect town with its Victorian streets and old canal banks was once capital of all Ireland.

Ballina on the Tipperary side, offers an excellent riverside park and seasonal outdoor swimming pool.

There are plenty of moorings for cruisers to stop off and explore Ballina and a jetty offers a platform to fish from next to the River Shannon. There are enticing eateries dotted around the town of Ballina as well as traditional Irish pubs with Irish music sessions especially during the summer months.

Both towns have a selection of boutiques, bakeries, artisan shops and galleries. There are plenty of activities to keep visitors entertained with lake cruises, the Lough Derg Way walking route, farmers market on Sundays, fishing for kids, famous golf courses and horse-riding. For outdoor activities UL Activity centre situated on the lake offers, sailing, kayaking, high ropes and SUP. Things to See and Do in County Clare and BeyondLakeside Holiday Homes are the perfect choice for visitors who wish to tour the west coast of Ireland. County Clare is a magical county with terrain ranging from rolling countryside to craggy Atlantic coastline. There is so much to offer you and your guests plus you can easily do several day trips from your holiday home in Killaloe.

Nearby Doolin village is a renowned centre for traditional Irish music and an access point the beautiful Aran Islands.

For a memorable holiday experience visit the Aillwee Caves and Doolin Cave, both have a cave system in the karst landscape of the Burren in County Clare. The name Aillwee is derived from the Irish Aill Bhuí which means "yellow cliff". Privately owned, it forms part of the Aillwee Cave and Birds of Prey Centre attraction. The award-winning Doolin Cave and visitor centre is home to the Great Stalactite, at 7.3 metres (23 feet) it is the longest free-hanging stalactite in Europe. The Great Stalactite, suspended from the ceiling like a chandelier, is truly astounding.

Explore the Burren National Park, a unique rocky wilderness area with Stone Age monuments and ancient churches. Discover cliffs, caves, fossils, rock formations and archaeological sites.

A 30-minute drive away is the 15th-century Bunratty Castle, a folk park rein-acting the medieval-era, enjoy traditional music and dance at Bunratty Castle & Folk Park.

Another added bonus is that you can easily access counties Tipperary and Limerick from our holiday accommodation in Killaloe. Tipperary has a collection of medieval and Celtic ruins, visit the Rock of Cashel which has sweeping pastoral views. Cahir Castle is an imposing 12th-century fortress sitting on an island in the River Suir.

Limerick city is a 25-minute drive from Killaloe and a major city in Ireland. This vibrant and compact old town is known for the medieval-era St. Mary’s Cathedral and St. John’s square, which is lined with Georgian townhouses. Standing along the River Shannon, the 13th-century King John’s Castle is one of the city’s most recognisable sites.

Clare is a wonderful county in western Ireland, with terrain ranging from rolling countryside to craggy Atlantic coastline, an ideal holiday destination for all ages.
