Long before the establishment of the Lac du Flambeau Reservation in the 1800s, the lakes, forests, and waterways of this region were home to Ojibwe (Anishinaabe) communities who traveled, gathered wild rice, fished, hunted, traded, and cared for these lands for generations.

The name “Lac du Flambeau,” meaning “Lake of Torches,” was given by French traders who observed Ojibwe people using birch bark torches to spear fish at night along the waterways. Today, Lac du Flambeau remains the ancestral and contemporary homeland of the Ojibwe people, whose enduring cultural traditions and deep connection to the region continue to shape its character. We are honored to welcome guests in the spirit of appreciation and respect for this beautiful land and its rich cultural heritage.

Guests are encouraged to explore the rich Ojibwe culture throughout the area, including local museums, cultural centers, pow wows, artisan markets, and seasonal tribal events celebrating the traditions of the Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians.
