The Corinth Canal is a lockless shipping channel in Greece. The channel is 6 kilometers long and 8 meters deep. The walls of the canal are of natural origin, mainly from limestone, the height of the walls reaches 76 meters. The width of the canal at sea level is 25 meters, and at the bottom - 21 meters.
The history of the construction of the canal is very curious. They tried to build it back in the 7th century BC on the orders of the Corinthian tyrant Periander, but the construction was stopped, because they thought that there was a very big difference between the level of the Ionian and Aegean seas, which could lead to flooding of neighboring lands. Attempts were also made to build even in 307 AD Poliorket, who also abandoned this venture because of the difference in the level of the bays. Subsequently, Julius Caesar and Caligula and Emperor Nero tried to turn to the construction, who drove more than 6,000 slaves to work.
In November 1869, the design of the canal was entrusted to the Hungarian architects Istvan Türr and Belé Gerster, who had previously prepared the design for the Panama Canal. On May 5, 1882, the construction of the canal was started by a French company, which stopped working due to financial difficulties, and did not finish the work. The Greek company, led by Greek banker and philanthropist Andreas Singru, picked up the project and completed the facility in record time. The operation of the canal began in 1893.
Now the channel has partially lost its economic significance. Due to the narrowness of the waterway, large ocean vessels, the width of which is close to 20 meters, cannot pass through the canal.
