We had a fantastic and relaxing time at this property. We were able to check in early and were able to relax after a rough day in the clean hot tub! Fantastic communication with the property owners and managers! We had such a great time we have recommended the accommodations to friends and family.
This was our 2nd time staying at Barney's retreat and our 2nd time being completely amazed. The home was clean just as before, and as peaceful as before!!
We had a great long weekend here. It was everything we wanted and more.this place is nice because of the beautiful views. one level and easy access to river. Well equip kitchen.
This cabin is so cute and a perfect stay for a winter getaway or summer escape! It’s very small and cozy but still comfortable with good quality appliances and amenities, and the hot tub is wonderful! The hosts were very communicative and gracious, and the property is located on a lovely private stretch of river while still being close to town! They provided all of the firewood we needed, and the cabin was a very comfortable stay. We will definitely be coming back in the summer!

Great weekend away
We’ve been coming to Barney’s Retreat for the past few years and will continue to make it part of our yearly vacation. The location couldn’t be better- it’s literally right on the river. The cabin is spacious enough yet still cozy. There’s plenty of spices/ cooking supplies if you need them.
Grounds and river were lovely. Cabin could use a little work but it didn't spoil a wonderful week on the Shenandoah. Hot
Tub was a great.

Absolutely Awesome!
Our stay at Barney's Retreat was nothing short of a PERFECT getaway. The owners have thought of everything their guests would need, including the "big bobber" cooler which got a bunch of use - LOL! We had such a peaceful and relaxing stay. This stretch of the river is perfect for wading in the water while fishing. We hope to return many more times.

Spring get away
We booked last minute before our trip, looking for a quiet place to get away and relax for our anniversary. Barney’s didn’t disappoint. We booked an additional night! The river was right out our back door and the cabin had everything we needed. We stayed for 5 days and never turned the tv on with so much to do outdoors. We definitely plan on returning.
We absolutely loved this little cabin! Just my husband and me for our anniversary trip. Definitely the most well stocked kitchen with cutlery, good pots and pans, etc. plus plenty of spices. Right on the river! Only 20 minutes from wal mart and grocery stores but really out there to get the secluded feel we were looking for. Right down the road from Shenandoah River Outfitters. We did the rafting on the river adventure. We hope to be back very soon!
We came to stay for our anniversary and really loved everything. Clean and perfect size! Hot tub was clean. The power did go out once, but only for maybe 20 minutes. Good information was left in the guest info book. Only two things I would note is that the shower is very smell, and if you’re sensitive to scented detergent, I would bring your own bedding. It wasn’t all washed in something scented, but something was enough to notice. Check in/check out was super simple. We will definitely come back in the future :)
My family had an absolute blast during our visit, making treasured memories in the embrace of nature. The ambiance was serene and is ideal for unwinding. We love the river, cooking s'mores at the fire pit, & playing at the yard. Everything is provided at Barney's retreat. All you need to bring is food. The not-so-favorite of ours is the hot tub because it appears not so clean and the water is a bit cloudy. Overall, Barney's Retreat is a perfect retreat for rejuvinating the mind and soul.

Perfect Outdoors Retreat!
Do not let the small square footage scare you away! If you enjoy the outdoors then this place is perfect and was way more than we expected!!! We spent almost the entire trip on the river, back porch, by the fire pit, or hanging out in the yard playing games. There were way more convenient factors both inside and out than advertised which made the trip even more enjoyable. Hot tub on the porch was a huge plus too!! Now for the price there must be a downside and unfortunately that was the very small shower, no washing machine / dryer, or dishwasher…but that should NOT stop you from booking this place. We will absolutely book here again!!
We loved it… until we checked out the hot tub!
It was unusable. Needed complete cleaning with a water change. I sent an email with pics to the property mgr and they offered to send someone over but we declined knowing the time needed to resolve the issue. We enjoyed the indoor fireplace as well as the fire pit outside. We’d like to go back in nicer weather and clean hot tub!!

Liked: Check-in, communication, location
Disliked: Cleanliness
Views are fantastic
Overall this place is nice because of the beautiful views. Pros: views, one level and easy access to river. Well equip kitchen. Cons: Only pile of wet wood under a tree, not any wood in wood shed. They did drop the firewood charge. There is a firewood charge. Could not use the jacuzzi during our stay as "stuff" in it. Management company did offer to have it drained but we were there only a few days and wanted the privacy. Definitely not looking as nice as the pics but if you want a nice private place to hang out this is it. Nothing to do with the owners but the overall fees and cleaning deposit etc., doubled the cost of our stay.
I scheduled this trip for a short getaway with my spouse and parents. I sought out a property with a hot tub, that was along the Shenandoah River close enough to the Shenandoah NP, and was dog-friendly.
The property was kind enough to allow us to have a second dog for an additional fee above their advertised 1 dog limit.
Comms were smooth.
The property was not super clean but manageable. I'll add, that I communicated with the property management team and they were attentive to addressing the concerns though were dismissive of the issues.
The ceiling has dust and spiderwebs hanging throughout; overhead lights included. There was a wolf spider nest that spanned a couple of feet in the bathroom above the door. There was cookware and dishware that needed to be washed before use, the blender had a black grime on its button panel. The house water filter was in obvious need of replacement (My father and I are plumbers). I needed to clean the toilet when I arrived. The bathroom walls need cleaning as well.
Our chief issue was the state of the hot tub. The water was cloudy to the point that you could not see the bottom of it and the interior of the cover had a green/brown algae/mold film on it.
The property managers were amicable to our request for a refund of the cleaning fee and hot tub charge.
Beyond the tub, spiders, and cleaning need, the property was fine and the location is great. I'd recommend the property and would stay again if the issues fielded were handled.
Barney's Retreat was great! Although it was winter and cold for our visit, we did get one sunny warmer day and we enjoyed sitting next to the river for a bit and listening to the river go by. The water is so clear! And the views up and down the river were very nice. We also loved the fireplace and hot tub for our winter stay :-) The cabin was very comfortable for me and my husband as well as my mom and dad. We had space to hang out, play some board games, cook dinners, and enjoy each other's company. There is no phone signal for verizon, but the wifi was good enough for us to connect to the internet for any online needs. Barney's Retreat is also close to Luray and we had a fun day exploring a few places around Luray as well! Do recommend.

Best place to stay around Shenandoah!
Me and my wife booked this place and it was by far the best place we’ve stayed at. The place was super clean and well maintained ! I loved the fact they had board games and card games for us to enjoy while staying there plus other nice features ! Definitely will be booking in the future when we visit Shenandoah again with no hesitation !

It was very peaceful and relaxing.
The property was very clean and homey. It had a beautiful view and the hot tub was amazing
. We will definitely be coming back!
We had a great getaway at Barney’s Retreat. We enjoyed the beautiful view of the river and lucked out with fireworks every night. Having easy access to the river even allowed us to get our usually anti-water golden retriever to wade in and she realized she actually enjoys the water!Location is about 20 minutes from downtown Luray and we enjoyed getting to explore with that area had to offer. Would recommend
A cute little house in the water. Beautiful view and quiet location.

Perfect place to relax!
We really enjoyed our stay. Cute, quiet cabin with all the necessary amenities. The river view is perfect and so relaxing. We spent the majority of our stay just floating in the river watching the canoers and kayakers float bye. The cabin is about 20 min from the town with plenty of places to eat and find a drink. The hot tub was great addition to the evening. We visited the caverns on the way out of town, a must see!
We had a great long weekend here. It was everything we wanted and more. Hosts were attentive with any questions. We will definitely be back and stay longer on our next visit.
My boyfriend and I stayed here last year to celebrate his birthday weekend and we loved it so much we came back this year, so cute and quaint. We will be back again!
