Magelang benefits from its proximity to one of the greatest Buddhist monuments in the world. Drive south from the city for approximately 30 minutes to Borobudur Temple. This vast religious complex was built in the eighth and ninth centuries and lays claim to being the world's biggest Buddhist monument. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is decorated with more than 2,000 reliefs and hundreds of Buddha statues. It is part of a triad of temples that includes Candi Mendut and Pawon Temple.
